'Superman' star Christopher Reeve dies at age 52

'Superman' star Christopher Reeve dies at age 52

NEW YORK (AP) — Christopher Reeve, the star of the Superman movies whose near-fatal riding accident nine years ago turned him into a worldwide advocate for spinal cord research, died Sunday of heart failure, his publicist said. He was 52.

Reeve fell into a coma Saturday after going into cardiac arrest while at his New York home, his publicist, Wesley Combs told The Associated Press by phone from Washington, D.C., on Sunday night.

Reeve was being treated at Northern Westchester Hospital for a pressure wound that he developed, a common complication for people living with paralysis. In the past week, the wound had become severely infected, resulting in a serious systemic infection.

"On behalf of my entire family, I want to thank Northern Westchester Hospital for the excellent care they provided to my husband," Dana Reeve, Christopher's wife, said in a statement. "I also want to thank his personal staff of nurses and aides, as well as the millions of fans from around the world who have supported and loved my husband over the years."

I never post on this board but when I saw it on the news it hit me pretty hard. It was just so out of nowhere and he was such a great man. It's very sad.

How sad.. Superman is not supposed to die. I saw a documentary about him and I was so proud that he was making progress.. but now he's dead

This is the most depressing news..... I'm going to spend the morning watching my Superman tapes as tribute.

I found this news very sad this morning as I heard it on the radio. I always had hope that Mr Reeve would one day get to walk again, I was so happy to see him back on Smallville doing work in the Superman universe. He will definatly be missed, but I am glad that he is out of pain and in a better place now. Rest in Peace Superman.

It did seem rather sudden. My heart and prayers go out to his loved ones. I had really believed he would beat the odds and get to walk again. He did so much good in the world. The world was a better place for having him be apart of it.

RIP Superman

I always had great admiration for Mr. Reeve. He never once gave up hope or had a negative attitude about his condition. He kept faith that a cure would be found one day. He never came off as feeling sorry for himself and I'm sure he has and will to continue to inspire many people even in his passing.

I hope his dream comes true even if he is not here to see it.
