Student in jail for stolen beer glass

Student in jail for stolen beer glass

A MUNICH court has freed a US student who spent four weeks in custody after he tried to steal a beer glass from the city's famous Hofbraeuhaus beer hall.

Munich prosecutors filed charges of violent theft against 22-year-old Christopher Tansay of New Mexico after his attempt to take the one-litre glass - worth 8 euros ($13.68) - ended in a scuffle with a security guard.

The Munich administrative court convicted him and imposed a fine of 1,260 euros ($2,155).

The charge can carry a prison term of one year or more, but a court-appointed expert, Wolfgang Eissenmenger, told the hearing that stealing beer glasses "is a sport at the Oktoberfest and the Hofbraeuhaus".

Judge Christian Gassner wished Tansay "all the best" as he closed the hearing. He said he regretted the fact that the sociology student had spent time in custody.

Talk about a waste of prison resourse!

I think the whole things ridiculous. A BEER GLASS. No matter how special it is. ::scorn::

I don't think it was for stealing the beer glass, it was for the altercation with the security guard.

Which would not have happened if the security guard wasn't so overly zealous over the beer glass...or quite posibly over that Christopher Tansay was American as well: Be it in not so much the guard was anti american but simply pro local boys if as Wolfgang Eissenmenger stated at the hearing that stealing beer glasses "is a sport at the Oktoberfest and the Hofbraeuhaus" and those thefts go unpunished.

However personally if the beer glass was only 8 euros why on earth didn't he try to pay for the thing?

wow - i stole a book from a pub on sat night after my drunken friends dared me, i'm glad there wasn't an over zealous security guard there.

I don't understand why he had to stay in custody for four weeks.

A beer glass? I bet a lot of those glasses get broken anyhow by raucous drinkers...
