Student, 13, fires AK-47 in Missouri school

Luckily no one was injured, but its disturbing to think what could've happened with a gun like this

Quote:
A 13-year-old student wearing a mask and a long, black trenchcoat fired an AK-47 into the ceiling at his school Monday morning after confronting a pair of students and administrators, telling them "please don't make me do this," officials said.
Quote:
No one was injured, and the boy, who police said was following a well-thought out plan, was taken into custody.

The seventh-grader pointed the gun at the two students, Principal Steve Gilbreth and Assistant Superintendent Steve Doerr, telling them "not to make me do this," Superintendent Jim Simpson said.

He then fired the shot into the ceiling, breaking a water pipe, and said again "Please don't make me do this," Simpson said.

Doerr and Gilbreth persuaded the youth to leave the building, and he was confronted by two police officers who had their weapons drawn. The student dropped the rifle and was taken into custody, Simpson said.

"It was a very close call," he said.

Talk about being an overachiever! That's quite a weapon there.

It's not an Ak-47, it's a semi-automatic civilian model that's avaliable at a number of gun stores. Probably something the kid's parents had.

You know, when I was in middle school, kids just didn't seem to do this. Sure, I'm only 21 but still, it just seems a world away from when I was in school. Things like this never cease to amaze me.

It's sad that there is a trend of school shootings going on lately. IMO, at least 1/4 of them are inspired by or trying to emulate Columbine

My god...this is so seriously horrible. How did he get his hands on this weapon? Aren't there laws regarding storage of guns?

No, laws on purchase of guns. 18+ for rifles/shotguns and 21+ for handguns, but there are no laws on storage. I think fingerprint stocks should be added to all weapons. People alowed to use the weapon have to imput their fingerprints. That would also help to catch someone that comitted a crime with a weapon and then tried to get rid of the gun.

Why, why, why would a civilian family have a semi-automatic? Guns will ALWAYS fall into the wrong hands... and I seem to recall that if you own a weapon for self-defense, it's actually statistically far more likely that you'll get hurt. And there are far too many cases of young children getting their hands on a parent's gun and hurting themselves.

This outbreak of school shootings since the one at Dawson is incredibly disturbing.

LOL... This is sad topic but you're right.

IMHO Lock up the parents AND lock up the kid [I mean.... intense psychological counseling]

Most guns are semi-automatics, everything but shotguns and rifles, unless you have a tactical shotgun or a clip fed rifle, like a Gerand or the like. Besides, it totally depends on the family. My family has always had guns. My dad had a gun before I was born, and I've never been hurt with it.

Sure, some families are far more careful than others. But too many aren't careful - or even if they are careful, there's always a chance of that one slip-up.

Can I ask you what your family's reasons are for owning guns? I've been trying to understand why gun rights are still so important to people (I can understand historical and maybe theoretical concepts of the right to self-defence) and all I can come up with is hunting & possible self-defence (I don't really agree with either, but being an urban Eastern Canadian I'm reasonably far removed from the debate, so I don't know as much as I ought.)
