The president does make a difference. Step away from your own political bias and allegiance, and you know that if Tim Thomas had snubbed the White House under Bush, he would have been called a hero and patriot. Obama is a cool hip dude according to Hollywood and the media. Bush was not. Plain and simple.
You must have a very, very short memory to believe this.

You are, of course, within your right to believe it, but I remember a different climate during President Bush's administration.

What sporting event this weekend would you rather have tickets to: the NHL All Star game or the Men's Final in the Australian Open?
No contest. the All-Star Game, all the way. Tennis bores me and hockey is awesome, so...

Way to be a stereotypical Canadian there, Sunny. To me, it's the other way around - I like both tennis and hockey, so I'd much rather go to the final of a major tournament than a meaningless all-star game. Make it the final of the Aussie Open or Game 7 of the Stanley Cup, and that's a much harder question to answer.

Way to go back on your Norwegian ancestry there, Dan.

Okay, so I know the sports is bigger in Finland (hello, Saku Koivu). But, you know, proximity...

I did debate. Because it wouldn't suck to be where there's summer right now. Not a fan for the winter, in general.

But, at the end of the day, I love the All-Star Game. Because it's the awesomeness of hockey without the stress of a regular season game. So I like it, even though it is pointless, in the grand scheme of things.

After what happened this weekend, I'd take the Men's Final in the Australian Open over the NHL All Star game. That Men's Final in the Australian Open was the longest Finals Grand Slam matchup in Open Era history. It's a no brainer. Australia in the Summer vs. Canada in the Winter? I know hockey is number 1 in Canada but tennis during the summer time in Australia sounds better.

Sunny I think we have one Norwegian in the NHL now (Mats Zuccarello), and I think he's playing in the AHL at the moment. So it's not that big a thing here, though it's still arguably the most followed American sport.

I loathe tennis. The longest match to me would just make it more boring. Now, I like playing tennis, but I hate watching it. I was even in London for Wimbledon with the chance to go and decided against it. That's one of those "once in a lifetime opportunities" I didn't care for.
In the All-Star games, I didn't care who won. I'm a Predator's fan and Suter was one one team and Weber was on the other. Normally, I'd go with Weber but I haven't liked his look recently. I think he's trying to play easy and keep himself healthy because he knows that he'll be going to another team next year. Which is fine with me. He hasn't been as big an asset for our team this year and if he wants to play that game, he can get off our team. Big points to Chara for his slapshot. I'd hate to be the goalie on the other side of that but when you're 14 feet tall, you'd better be able to put some strength behind it.

Well, Noway not being super represented in the NHL doesn't necessarily mean hockey is an unpopular sport in the country.

I mean, I'll take your word that it's not one of the big ones in Norway. I'm just saying, from where I'm standing, for all I knew, maybe Norwegian players prefered to stick to European leagues. There are different rules, after all, and I wouldn't be surprised that at least some players would prefer to stick nearer home and with the system they're used to.

Again, I totally heard you when you said it's not that big a sport. I'm just saying that I didn't want to make any assumptions since I didn't know that fact, before you told me.

I didn't watch the All-Stars Game. So obviously my level of investment wasn't huge. Hockey's more fun when you're there in person anyway. But... even on TV? Still way more fun than tennis. To me.

I suppose that's true.

Egypt soccer fans rush field after game, 74 dead

By SARAH EL DEEB, Associated Press 2 hours, 31 minutes ago

CAIRO (AP)—At least 74 people have been killed and hundreds injured after soccer fans rushed the field in the seaside city of Port Said following an upset victory by the home team over Egypt’s top club, setting off clashes and a stampede as riot police largely failed to intervene.

Wednesday’s tragedy was a bloody reminder of the deteriorating security in the Arab world’s most populous country as instability continues nearly a year after former President Hosni Mubarak was swept out of power in a popular uprising.

The melee—which followed an Egyptian league match between Al-Masry, the home team in the Mediterranean city, and Al-Ahly, based in Cairo and one of Egypt’s most popular teams—was the worst case of soccer violence in Egypt and the deadliest worldwide since 1996. One player said it was “like a war.”

Not sure if sports are entirely to blame, though, or if it was just used as an excuse to get out some pent-up frustration. And while you can blame the police for not intervening, I think that might have caused even more deaths. Still, very sad news.

People let this kind of thing be an excuse for rioting.

I just don't understand this mentality when it comes to sports. Like the Hockey Riot in Canada a year or two ago, and there are always riots in soccer, especially in certain countries, like Mexico and places in South America. It's crazy. I like my sports but I've never considered rioting.

Oh, no, no. This wasn't about sports, are you kidding me?

Morons riot if their hockey team wins or loses a game. That's property damages with a side order of theft.

What happened in Egypt was a civil war that's been taken to phase two. Mubarak is out, but these people don't necessarily know how to get along. And there's a good chance criminals and hooligans have been chomping at the bit to do some damage anyway.

The game was the set piece; it was not the reason.
