Some pharmacist refusing birth control due to religious beliefs

I thought this was a joke when I first heard it, but its apparently completely true

Quote:
Some pharmacists across the country are refusing to fill prescriptions for birth control and morning-after pills, saying that dispensing the medications violates their personal moral or religious beliefs.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...2005Mar27.html

It's completely legal too as long as the pharmacist that deny them the birth control tell them another place they can get them. That's where another problem comes in, instead of going ahead and telling these women where they can get them these pharmacists give them a freaking lecture about them. The Abrams Report had a story about this where a guy who actually does refuse to give them said it doesn't have anything to do with religion, he's just protecting women from the dangers of the pills. Yet any sort of medicine has some potential side effect. He does however give out viagra because it helps relationships, while according to birth control hurts them. I'm just amazed that this stuff is going on.

I heard about this on MSNBC today (yesterday now, since it's after midnight.).

The pharmisist from Louisiana wouldn't even say directly that it was for religious reasons. He said it was for health reasons... That these drugs are killing women. The other woman they were interviewing for the counter opinion said but they've been around for 30 years though, and he said, yeah and they've been killing women for 30 years.

What the heck?!

I heard of a similar thing here in australia recently where a pharmacist in a country town is refusing to sell condoms due to his religious beliefs and he is the only pharmacist in the town.

I think the case in Australia was more of the fact of how hard it actually is to purchase condoms in country towns because they are kept behind the counter and because it is the one chemist in town and it is a tight-knit community, it is quite embarassing because they are worried that they will tell their parents, thus they don't purchase protection and thus, the reason for the high rural teen pregnancy rate in Australia compared to urban areas of Australia.

*

I think this is simply terrible. If I were there, I would simply buy none of my medicine or needs from the chemist at all if it were possible. The excuse that they kill women - Yo, mate CHILDBIRTH kills women, you ain't doing anything to stop that without your selling of Viagra. All drugs have side effects. The Pill, in it's various forms does have adverse side effects but that is the minority. Sell the bloody thing or at least don't be hypocritical in what you do sell and don't sell.

In issues like these, you wonder how or why religion usually gets in the way. True yeah, there are religions that actually have a thing against birth control.

I know. And the interviewer even asked him what about viagra, and he said oh no that's a completely different medicine. That one helps couples, instead of creating a barrier-

Or something like that, and then he was cut off. I really would have liked to hear the rest of what he was saying.

So do I...

For one thing, Viagra enhances you to use birth control in the 1st place...

This is what happens when religion goes too far. I heard about this a few weeks ago. Its been happening all over the country (although not very often).

The state of Illinois just passed a law that said that pharmacists MUST fill all prescriptions and cannot refuse to. All states should pass the same law.

New Hampshire just passed a law making the morning after pill available over the counter as well.

If people truly want to reduce the number of abortions, birth control needs to be readily available.

Now that is not right. I take birth control because of a clotting disorder to help control my cycles. They have no right playing God.

The only way they can kill you is if you smoke while on the pill. Oi.

Any pharmacist who refuses to fill certain prescriptions should be fired. Their job is to FILL PRESCRIPTIONS. Their job is NOT to dispense moral advice, and their job is NOT to suddenly decide that pills are "killing women."

Really?! Oh thank goodness, there is still hope! I heard about this several months ago, and it had been denied. Hopefully this will spread to other states now.

When i first read this the first thing that popped into my head was 'But that's his JOB. To fill out prescriptions.' People take birth control for all sorts of reasons. Who is he to say what people can and cannot get?

I totally agree. If he/she is not willing to perform the tasks of their job, they should be fired. End of story.

Heh...if they think contraceptives might prove to be deadly for women...they should see Advil...the one linked to giving you Alzhimers...(?).

Why is religion trying to interfere? Religious people should know that's like interfering with God after all!
