So whats your view on the Schapelle Corby case?

I'm sure most of you have heard of it by now, but for those who haven't here's a link to a story

http://talkleft.com/new_archives/010894.html

The judge wouldn't accept any of the defenses arguments, such as how there are known cases of baggage handlers in Australia who plant drugs into bags. Also when Corby was caught with the drugs they didn't do any finger printing to make sure she'd put them their herself. From what i've seen it seems pretty obvious that she was innocent in this. The only deal planned at the moment is some deal where Australia will send some Indonesian prisoners in their jails back to spend the rest of their jail time in Indonesia for Corby to comeback to Australia and spend her jail time there. But it seems she'll have to spend a certain portion of her sentence in Indonesia before that can happen.

I don't think there's any "guarantee" she's innocent. I think there's a chance, but unless they can prove she didn't put the drugs there, she dosen't have a chance. Whether people like this or not, there was a lot of proof she did it.

How long does it take to smoke that amount of pot? Could she have really used it all during the vacation?

this was the case against her

Quote:
10 pieces of evidence that went against her
May 29, 2005

1. The vacuum-sealed marijuana was in a boogie board bag that Corby admitted owning.

2. Customs official Gusti Nyoman Winata said he asked Corby to open the bag, but she unzipped only a front pocket. "When I opened it a bit, she said: 'No'," Mr Winata said. "I asked: 'Why?', and she said: 'I have some,' and looked confused." Mr Winata added that she blocked his hand to stop him opening the main zip.

3. Corby disputed Mr Winata's version, but there was no CCTV system in operation to support her denial.

4. A second customs official said Corby admitted owning the drugs.

5. Corby failed to notice the bag's extra weight. Her excuse was that the bag's handle had been broken on the way to Bali, meaning she had to drag it.

6. While Australian baggage handlers have since been linked to an airport cocaine-smuggling ring, which was in operation on the date Corby flew to Bali, there has never been any suggestion or evidence of them trafficking marijuana.

7. A drug dealer employing baggage handlers would be highly unlikely to smuggle four kilograms of marijuana into Brisbane airport and then into a stranger's bag, just to send it on to Sydney. Such a task would further require another handler at Sydney to sneak it out of the bag and hide it while attempting to get it out of the airport. As road haulage experts have confirmed, smug-glers could avoid this by sending it by road.

8. Prosecutors claim the plastic bag was the same size and shape as the boogie board bag, suggesting it had been organised to fit, as opposed to being stuffed in by someone else, such as baggage handlers.

9. Hydroponic marijuana is highly sought after among cashed-up expatriates and tourists in Bali.

10. Had Corby been aware of the drugs and had her bag been properly secured with a padlock, there would have been no chance of her claiming that the marijuana had been planted in her bag.
personally, i was convinced she was innocent, now i'm not too sure, you can convince yourself of a lot of things when your facing lifelong inprisonment or firing squad, and frankly, i am disgusted at the media circus and the reactions of the Australian Public, calling to pull aid out of Indonesia, ringing charities asking for their donations back for the Tsunami...

Where's the sympathy and outcry for the other Australians who are in Indonesian jails, some of whom have the same story as Corpy supposedly has, the drugs were planted on them, but nobody gives a toss about them...

I know, that disgusts me as well. I'm all for boycotting Bali as a holiday destination, but wanting to take away aid money is just sick.
