Slim-Fast Sheds Whoopi Goldberg After Bush Riff

Quote:
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Comedian Whoopi Goldberg (news) will no longer appear in ads for diet aid maker Slim-Fast following her lewd riff on President Bush (news - web sites)'s name at a fund-raiser last week, the company said on Wednesday.

Florida-based Slim-Fast said it was "disappointed" in Goldberg's remarks at last Thursday's $7.5 million star-studded fund-raiser at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

"Ads featuring Ms. Goldberg will no longer be on the air," Slim-Fast General Manager Terry Olson said in a statement, adding that the company regrets that Goldberg's remarks offended some customers.

Republicans have expressed outrage over the fund-raiser for presumptive Democratic nominee John F. Kerry and his vice presidential running mate, John Edwards (news - web sites), in which entertainers lined up to skewer the president.

The New York Post said of Goldberg's appearance at the event: "Waving a bottle of wine, she fired off a stream of vulgar sexual wordplays on Bush's name in a riff about female genitalia."

A spokesperson for Goldberg declined immediate comment.

Slim-Fast is a unit of Anglo-Dutch food-to-detergent group Unilever Plc .
What did she say? I have been trying to find a video or article that mentions it but I haven't had any luck. Apparently people are refusing to release video of the event or a transcript...argh!

Here's another article about Slimfast dumping Whoopi: this article

Quote:
At one point in a speech mocking the Bush administration, Goldberg used his surname as a sexual reference.
I think it's kind of weird that they'd dump Whoopi now, when she got away with lots of anti-Bush comments on her NBC sitcom, including a similar Bush sex joke on her lesbian wedding episode.

(There was a lesbian wedding taking place at the hotel on the same day that Courteney, Mavis's ultra-Republican brother, was holding a Republican fundraiser. Mavis tried to keep the events separate by asking guests which event they were here for.)

Quote:
"I'm here for the Bush event."
"You're gonna have to be more specific..."
(i.e., "bush" meaning that lesbians were fond of female genitalia.)

Goldberg's comments were probably in bad taste and inappropriate, but at the same time, the conservatives wasted no time in laughing it up and patting Dick Cheney on the back when he told Patrick Leahy to go "***** himself" a couple of weeks ago. I see a double standard at work. Are we the public to surmise that we are not allowed to use, let's call it "Cheney language," in public?

Well I for one did not appreciate Cheney making those comments. He needed to take a valium or smoke some pot and CHILL out.

I think it is a loss for Slim Fast. SUPPOSEDLY she lost quite a bit of weight on their product - she was a good spokeswoman. She did what she was supposed to do. Now if she comes out and says it wasn't their product after all and that it gave her gas - that would serve them right.

Well being that Slim Fast is full of sugar & the weight loss doesn't typically last forever...it would serve them right.

So they fired her because some consumers said that they would boycott...well what if some now say they will boycott because they fired her.

I'm so sick of listening to people whine when someone jokes Bush or has something negative to say about him - well damn that isn't hard - the man has set his ignorant self up to get ribbed at every possible chance there is.

What is really interesting is that I thought her show was doing great - I loved it...and she didn't JUST joke Bush - that's her thing - to joke all politicians.

But her show was cancelled...hmmmm....I wonder why.

I know someone who says that she and her whole family use lots of Slimfast products, but now that they've fired Whoopi, she wrote Slimfast a letter and said she's going to stop using all the products now.

Geez, I wish we had some freedom of speech in this country. I mean, Whoopi wasn't making these jokes in public, or in that place where Cheney made his comments, where swearing isn't allowed at all.

It was a PRIVATE EVENT; it was a Democratic rally. What did you expect? Her to watch her words and be nice to Bush? I remember that there was some flack about Barbra Streisand singing an anti-Bush, anti-Cheney version of her song "People," and that too was intended for a private Democratic audience. Yet Republicans make a big stink about these things, as if Republicans aren't making their own nasty comments about Democrats at their functions.

I think what Cheney did was different from what Whoopi did. Whoopi is an entertainer, she's supposed to make jokes! Cheney is a politician, and they're supposed to be more intelligent than to use that type of language.

This reminds me of the Improv show my school's theatre department put on. This guy did this great impression of Bush, it was hilarious. But two sets of parents in the audience got mad so the teacher made them take it out.

Yeah. I've never taken SlimFast in my entire life and I probably never will but I feel like writing to them anyway saying that I'm never going to buy their product ever.

I think it is stupid that they fired her because she expressed her opinions. What ever happened to freedom of speech, something our president is suppose to love.

It just shows how much power Bush thinks he has. As for her NBC show, she makes fun of Bush all the time, there was a time when she got to meet him because he stopped in her hotel and she was making fun of him. That is her perogative(spelling) because the first amendment allows it.

Next time Slim Fast should think about all of their buyers instead of just a few that want to complain. They should look to see if Whoopi's ads brought them in any money since they have aired. Whatever i dont use their product and they are shooting themselves in the foot, but if they want to do that they can, it was almost the same thing for Disney for not waiting to be associated with Michael Moore's film, and look where it landed them they are missing out making tons of money off of the movie and getting negative publicity.

first off i don't recall "laughing it up" when dick cheney said the f-word. besides, kerry said it in rolling stone. it's a curse word. like anyone on this board has never used it.

second he wasn't on stage and being filmed and it wasn't at a funderraiser ect, ad infinitum.

I don't think it's appropriate to try to justify Dick Cheney using the f-word -- he was NOT supposed to use it, and I don't care if everyone's used it before, that's completely missing the point. When you live the life of a politician, you have to watch your step a bit. Millions of people smoke cigarettes or do miscellaneous drugs, but if a president does that, its a huge news item. Just yesterday there was something in the news about how Edwards' brother had gotten a DUI 11 years ago. Am I responsible for everything MY brother does? No, and he shouldn't be either.

Sorry to be a bit off topic here...back to Whoopi.
Now, I don't agree with Slim Fast for one second, but I think Whoopi should have realized that the tensions in this election are VERY high and that it was probably not wise to say something like that, if she wanted to keep this job. However, I applaud her for expressing her feelings - I'm sure they're going to suffer more from firing her than she's going to suffer without the job.

Cheney was working, in a professional situation and told a Senator where he could go. I think most of us have said those words but I've never done it in a working situation either to a co-worker or someone in a higher or lower position. If I did I'm sure there would be reprecussions..I don't think Fox News would interview me so I could tell them how good I felt about saying it.

Bottom line is that the Republicans wanted an apology from Kerry when he said the 'f' word and demanded it again from Whoopi for her off-color remarks. They were silent for the most part when Cheney mouthed off other so you have to assume they approved of it.

Actually I don't really care what they say but don't be hypocritical about it..that's all.

i never said that he should have said it. however senators are hardly his underlings. they are elected officials, just as he is. in addition, i don't recall anyone ever asking kerry to apoligise for saying the f-word in RS.
