Search for Missing Utah Woman Enters Third Week

I couldn't think of a title, but here's the article I just read regarding Lori Hacking and her husband Mark.

http://apnews.myway.com//article/200...D84609484.html

I'm both fascinated and appalled by this whole thing. The whole web of lies this guy's told is starting to unravel and it's not looking good.

Thoughts?

The police arrested her husband today (or yesterday?) and are planning on charging him with aggravated murder. There is an article about here on CNN about it.

So they think he did it? It's so depressing. What exactly drives husbands to murder their wives?

Well, from the sounds of it, he was already a bit of a nutter. I imagine his wife finding out that he actually hadn't gotten in to medical school might have lead to a confrontation...and then, well. Here we are now.

Incredibly sad.

The idea that recently there has been quite a few pregnant women going missing is extremely heartbreaking. There is help out there.

Interesting what you said because I read someone that she left work Friday after finding out sometime that day but was able to go to a going away party as well. So it was Friday Night, All of Saturday and Sunday, up to 9pm when Lori was alive and she knew about the university lie.

I find this really depressing as well.

Records show Lori Hacking, a stock broker's assistant at Wells Fargo, graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of Utah in 1999.
She put her plans to pursue an MBA on hold until her husband could graduate from medical school.
She doted on her husband and it appears as though he may have killed her.

He kept textbooks spread open around his apartment
I find this funny because that is what my room is like so that my parents thinkg that I am studying when I'm actually on the net or reading books or magazines.

EDIT: On Find Lori.com there is a msg from Lori's mother. It is simply heartbreaking. I sat at my computer and cried because it is so upsetting

Well, I live in Utah, and I can sure say this case has sure put a sober feeling into this community. I think after the Elizabeth Smart case turned out like it did, we just kind of thought this would turn out the same. How tragic and awful that it won't.

They've just taken some live shots from the city landfill, where the Forensic Services, detectives, and cadaver dogs are back at it tonight. I really pray that they find her. It's awful to think she may stay buried there. 35 feet deep in trash. So horrible.

Your point about the cadavar dogs reminded me of something. Why are they putting cadavar dogs into the landfill when their sense of smell is going to be confused so much from all the different smells of old meat etc. I really think that although it would be a nasty job, the police should be getting in there and finding her body because I believe thats the only way that it's going to be found.

I'd forgotten about the Utah connection. It would be so weird for the community. They never believed that Elizabeth Smart was coming back but she did and they thought that Lori Hacking was coming back.

It's dreadful. All these missing people are dreadful. Over here in Australia is National Missing Persons Week and its just sad to read all the recounts about missing family members. Every now and then I make a visit to the Missing Persons Website - it's simply heartbreaking.

Especially the 'laci connection' with her husband being in jail now and all. It's really sad that when you think of a missing woman now, your brain can't help but make that connection, at least for a fleeting second.

What happened to love, honor and cherish?

Elizajoy, the cadaver dogs are in there because they are trained specifically to pick up on her scent. I imagine it would be kind of distracting with all the different scents, but these dogs are trained for this stuff and to help the process.

They were interviewing a lady that works with cadaver dogs on the local news last week. Apparently, she runs the dog unit in Idaho. She said she thought the prospects for finding her were slim. She said while the dogs are trained to pick up on decomposing human flesh, there is so much other human waste in a landfill, that it can confuse the dogs. She also said she probably wouldn't use her dogs in a landfill, because while the humans can wear protective suits, the dogs are left virtually unprotected. She did think that conducting the search at night would be helpful, because the near 100 degree temps during the day make the odors that confuse the dogs even stronger.

I really hope they find her. It's just horrible to think she may have to stay there.

I just read this article about this story in a magazine and i was amazed. I think the husband is just crazy. And how did he keep his web of lies going for so long on so many people? Its just crazy...like the husband.

Yeah, the DA just had the press conference to announce the charges.

1 Count of Felony Murder (5yrs to Life)
3 Counts of obstruction of justice

Unfortunately, they still don't have the body. Plus, he said in his "confession" that he SHOT her. They haven't found the gun either. No body, no murder weapon. I'm afraid this guy could walk.

Well even if they don't find the murder weapon, I heard that they had found lots of evidence of blood in the bedroom and on the mattress. I don't think he could explain that away.

I have got this strong feeling that they're looking in the wrong place for her body. I think it's closer to the house rather than at a dump.

When they were looking for Laci, I said to my mom "They need to look in the ocean and they'll find her." Sure enough, two days later they found her washed up on the shore. Some times that scares me when I'm right.

I think you may be on to something there M. Hacking hasn't been truthful in anything else, why would he be truthful about how he disposed of her body?

I think he's pretty slick. He's worked in the psych ward here, so I think his insanity plea will be strong. However, the bar for that defense in Utah is one of the highest in the country, his lawyer is going to have a tough time with that still.

Fortunately, the blood evidence is very strong. That and the confession seem to be the heart of the case. The gun shot thing threw everyone for a loop. None of the other people in the apartment building can recall hearing a gun shot.
