Scissors Get 4th Grader In Trouble

Scissors In A Backpack? Book Her, Danno

POSTED: 7:01 pm EST December 11, 2004

PHILADELPHIA -- Having a pair of scissors in her backpack at school got a 10-year-old girl into a lot of trouble.

The child was handcuffed and taken to a Philadelphia police station when the 8-inch shears were discovered. They were found during a search of students' belongings after a teacher reported some items missing from her desk.

School district officials said the fourth-grader didn't threaten anyone, but she did violate a policy that considers scissors to be potential weapons. They said they were following state law by calling police.

The police said school authorities were also right to bring her to the police station, though she was soon released. The girl's mother said the treatment was too harsh.

Careful, she may bring a SPORK the next time and cut you!

ITA.

How are scissors considered dangerous? Granted, 8-inches is a bit bigger than usual, but she probably lost her regular pair. If she didn't threaten anyone then there was NO reason to arrest her.

A 10th grader at my school got suspended for bringing scissors in to work on a health project. He's the brother of one of my friends - NO WAY was this kid going to use the scissors for anything but the health project. So ridiculous.

Handcuffed? That absolutely disgusting. Yeah, because a 10-year-old-girl could overpower police and do some real damage. Especially without the scissors on her. Ridiculous. Damn right the treatment was too harsh. Imagine how frightened she'd have been.

Careful, the little children will start turning into monsters and bring spades to school. Because they are such a threat. *scoffs*

I'd be pulling her out of the school straight away.

Besides, what right do they have to search those children's bags? Our school, if they needed to search it on suscpion, would call the parents for permission and if it wasn't given they weren't looked at.

Maybe they shouldn't be allowed to write, either. Careful, might jam you in the eye with my #2 pencil.

Police Chief Sorry For Arresting 10-Year-Old With Scissors
Philadelphia Police Chief Says Officers Will Use More Discretion

UPDATED: 7:20 AM EST December 14, 2004

PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia's police chief is apologizing to the mother of a 10-year-old girl arrested and handcuffed after bringing a pair of scissors to school in her backpack.

Chief Sylvester Johnson says officers were following protocol when they drove the girl to a police station with her hands cuffed in front of her. But Johnson says more discretion will be used in future cases involving young children.

The district says Porsche Brown violated a ban on bringing scissors -- which are considered potential weapons -- to school.

The fourth-grader did not threaten anyone with the eight-inch shears.

She was released after officers decided Thursday that she hadn't committed a crime

That's just crazy. They handcuffed a 10 year old? I'm so shocked and appalled that i can't even put my thoughts together for this. This is just way too overboard. Its like everyone thinks that all children are evil and out to get people. calm down people.
