School Principal In Trouble After Having 5-Year-Old Handcuffed

POSTED: 6:59 am EST December 16, 2004

ST. LOUIS -- A St. Louis charter school principal has been placed on leave -- after asking police to handcuff an unruly 5-year-old boy and drive him around the block in a squad car.

Sam Morgan is principal of Thurgood Marshall Academy. He said he has spent more time working with the boy, "trying to steer him straight."

Morgan said the boy is "heading for the Department of Corrections at 5." He said the boy fights, hits somebody practically every day on the bus and is a constant disruption.

The boy's mother acknowledg ed her son may have been disruptive but said handcuffs are for adults who "murder and kill," not 5-year-olds in kindergarten.

A St. Louis police spokesman said the department is looking into the incident. He says it's not police practice to handcuff 5-year-olds.

Why would police even agree to do this. It's pretty obvious that its nott he right thing to do.

And this coming after the report a few weeks ago that a police officer used a tasergun on a 6 year old. Amazing.

What is going on in the world? Most 5 year olds fight their friends, its not nice but perfectly normal.

Ok, if the kid had been slightly old (maybe like 8 or 9) and the parents had to agree to it I wouldn't think anything of it. Also, this would be assuming that the child was having serious issues (fighting and other) moreso than a normal kid. Sometimes the scare tactic programs do help.

But to a 5 year old? They fight and they're unruly. THat's just how they are at that age and I don't think a 5 year old would really comprend what was going on either.

What happened to the good ol' days when you got in trouble at that age and were forced to stand facing the corner all alone.

I guess they think it's more effective to handcuff you.

I swear, we've sucken to a new level.

Although I don't know if the principle should be fired over it. Because yeah what he did wasn't that great but i think he had good intentions. I think maybe they should just sit down with him and explain to him why he can't do that. Like the school board or something.

Plus, it was the stupid cops that agreed to to do it, sitll don't understand that one.

Intentions or not, I think anybody who would handcuff a kindergartener has no business running a school.

His intentions are definetly good, but kids can have their mental state hurt really easily at that age. There are kids that grow up hating cops for stuff like this.

If the kid is really "that bad", i'd say the best thing to do is talk to his mom and try to get him to see some kind of psychiatrist to see if he has any mental problems.

He just handled the situation wrong, I'm still shocked that he would do something like that without consulting the parents.

I mean, I don't even think it's legal to have the kids leave the school property without parental permission.

Yeah I mean sooner or later the kid is gonna have to learn, but at that age there are other ways to teach. I mean, don't you think 5 is a little early to be shoving a kid up against a stone wall. Like, "you better sit still and be nice or else!!" Or else what, you'll become a dealer and wind up on death row? Thats what the handcuffs are saying. The worst "or else" kid understands at that age is, "or else you won't be watching Duck Tales for a week....

Exactly!

Handcuffs are for dealers and pimps. The term juvenile delinquent doesn't really apply to a five year old IMO...

The principal/school/cops should worry about a lawsuit too. They definetly didn't have the right to do that to the kid so I wouldn't be surprised if the parents took some kind of action.
