Not a pleasent though to enterain by any means but it comes with the choice you made to defend your country. As well, the troops aren't sent somewhere to die - they are sent somewhere to fight. There is a difference.
I totally agree with you. But people jump right back and say they join because they are poor and do it for the college benefits.

Well you know what, I have $15K in loans that I AM PAYING BACK (not my parents)...AND I just finished my FIRST YEAR! I took out another $8K in loans for this upcoming year! I am by no means weatthy. My parents have no money and aren't helping me pay for college in any way.

It's as if these people think that the only way you can pay for college is (a) your parents pay for you or (b) you join the military. Did we completely forget about financial aid, part time jobs, loans?

I have a lot of respect for people who join the military. It can't be an easy decision, but there is a risk you take when you join - and that is the fact that you could be sent to combat.

That is so true. I am glad that you mentioned that because that is a good point. That bugs me so much when people talk about wanting to go to school but they don't want to in financial payback for the rest of their life. I feel like saying "hello that is a part of life". That really bugs me when people say that. I was fortunate enough that my parents pay for my education. But, my dad pointed that I would have to pay for half of my law school tutition when the times comes. And I respect that because his dad did the same thing. And, I will be filing for grants, loans, and any possible financial aid I can get. Paying it back isn't the end all, you know?

That is a part I heard about Moore's movie (which I didn't see nor will I) but that he goes around with a marine that doesn't want to go Iraq. Moore makes this big case, like you pointed out, that the military recruits these poorer kids. Well, just because a kid is poor doesn't mean the military is the only option. But, the military does provide good benefits and college opportunities that helps out those with less money. The thing that bugged me about some of the military that was called to duty was their complaints about not thinking they would have to go to battle. Which I mean I can understand going into a war is a very scary thing but you signed up for the military. College was the second option provided by your military enlistment - not the other way around.

Did anyone catch Kerry's speech last night at the DNC? I caught a bit of it before it was muted. It amazed me how he talked about the troops and wanting to protect them and help them if he were elected. But, didn't he vote for the war but against the 80 billion dollar bill to give the troops more supplies ?

People around here think Kerry is laughable and weak. His decisions are ruled by the public opinion polls. What's he going to do if we have another terrorist attack? Wait for an opinion poll to tell him what to do?
Bush may have alot of faults, but the one thing I like about him is he stands up for what he believes it, no matter what other people think. I cringe when I think about what might've happened in this country if anyone else had been in office on 9/11. I think he's handled one of the toughest presidencies in history very well, and he definitely has my vote in November.

I thought Kerrys speech was pretty good. I have to say I was impressed with a lot of what he said. I too was wondering about how he was going to provide marines with the best equipment, when he voted against giving it to them!

I did like what he said about stem cell research. While I DO NOT think embryos should be created or "manufactured" simply for the purpose of stem cell research, I do think that left over embryos from pregnancy clinics and things like that should be allowed to be used to create new strains. I also think that adult stem cells should be researched a lot too.

I'm still interested in learning about his policies. Because I will be honest, a lot of them sound great and I agree with them...but I question how they will be PAID for and implemented.

Did he mention ANYTHING about college students? I am getting sick and tired of politicians in this country leaving us out of the equation. I want to know how they are going to confront the rising tuition costs, etc.

The ballon drop at the end kicked @$$ though. 100,000 ballons they said! Unbelievable! They sure now how to party and go all out, I'll say!

Did you hear though? Apparently CNN caught the DNC director LIVE ON TV saying: "Jesus! We need more balloons. I want all balloons to go, goddammit... There's not enough coming down! All balloons, what the hell! There's nothing falling! What the f@#k are you guys doing up there?" Some funny *****! Guy needs to take a chill pill!

I saw Michael Moore on Jay Leno last night and I heard him talking about Ralph Nader. Basically he doesn't want him to run. You know it just ticks me off. He is an American citizen and he has EVERY RIGHT TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT.

I hate how Democrats get angry that he is running because he is "taking votes away."

Um, no. Maybe he is WINNING VOTES. Maybe people are just pissed off with both the Republican and Democrats and are looking for another alternative. If I don't like what George Bush has to say, why should I just automatically vote for John Kerry. What if I don't like what HE has to say either?

The way Moore said it, you'd think anyone who is voting for Nader is an idiot. That's the nice thing about democracy though, you can vote for WHO YOU WANT. He acts like it's a life or death issue between Kerry and Bush.

If there was a third party candidate "taking votes" away from Bush, I would say RIGHT ON! It's called freaking democracy and I think the more candidates the better!

I thought he voted for Nader in the 2000 election? I think it was on Bill O'Reilly that I heard it. It wasn't the interview they did this week but one in the past.

My mom thought the same thing. Did you see what he did at the very beginning of his speech? "I am John Kerry and I report to duty" then he saluted everybody? I was sitting there thinking "alright that's gay, even if Bush did that I still would have thought it was gay". It seemed like every other thing he said was about him in Vietnam. Kinda sounded like an old grandpa talking to kis grandkids about "back in the war days".

I am not sure - I can look into that and see.

LOL! That was funny - I caught it on one of the late night shows. I guess the censors weren't thinking they were needed. Tisk tisk - it is just balloons - breathe in breathe out.

Do any of you catch Bush's speech on Friday? I thought it was really good - I listened to it in the car and he sounded right on target. What did you think?

Exclusive: Nancy Reagan Strongly Endorses President Bush

Phil Brennan, NewsMax.com
Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004

In a statement made Monday to NewsMax.com, Nancy Reagan said she was strongly endorsing President Bush's re-election and rejected a published Internet report that she was not backing his run for a second term.

Joanne Drake, the chief of staff for former President Ronald Reagan’s office in Los Angeles, said in a statement on behalf of the former first lady, “Mrs. Reagan supports President Bush’s re-election 150 percent.”

Published reports have suggested that Mrs. Reagan was unhappy with President Bush for his opposition to taxpayer-funded stem cell research that kills human embryos, which Mrs. Reagan has supported after her husband’s long bout with Alzheimer’s disease.

Mrs. Reagan’s son Ron spoke last week at the Democratic National Convention. He indicated that his mother supported his speech and that she was unhappy with the Bush administration for its stand on embryonic stem cell research.

Ron Reagan gave an implicit endorsement to the Kerry-Edwards ticket, which supports taxpayer funding of that type of research, when he told his national audience, “Whatever else you do come Nov. 2, I urge you, please, cast a vote for embryonic stem cell research.”

Drake, however, noted in her statement on behalf of Mrs. Reagan, “I think everyone would understand that while she may not agree with the president on every issue, this campaign is more than just one issue – it’s about leadership, and she believes that President Bush is the right man for the job.”

Mrs. Reagan’s statement came on the heels of a report published Friday on the Web site capitolhillblue.com.

That story, headlined "Nancy Reagan to Bush: 'We Don't Support Your Re-Election,'" quoted a “spokesman” for Mrs. Reagan as telling the site, "Mrs. Reagan does not support President Bush’s re-election and neither do most members of the President’s family."

Drake also denied the Web site’s claim that Mrs. Reagan told Republican leaders she wanted nothing to do with the party or President Bush, or that she "went ballistic" when she learned the Bush campaign was test marketing ads that used Reagan’s photos and speeches in an effort to show he supported Bush and his re-election.

Capitolhillblue.com also claimed that Mrs. Reagan called Republican Party chief Ed Gillespie to demand the ads be destroyed.

“The quote that appeared in Capitol Hill Blue is incorrect,” Drake said on behalf of Mrs. Reagan. “Further, I do not know where the information came from [indicating that] the former first lady went ballistic when she read the Bush campaign was test marketing new ads. She did not speak to Ed Gillespie on the telephone and demand the ads be destroyed ...”

By endorsing President Bush’s re-election, Mrs. Reagan joins President Reagan’ elder son, Michael, who has already announced his strong support for the president's re-election. Michael will be speaking at the GOP convention in New York.

I just have to say that I love Laura Bush, and have a greater respect for her after seeing her on Bill O'Reilly the other day. She's such a polite, well-spoken person. I hope she's First Lady for another four years.

I agree with you, Selina. I saw her the other night on O'Reilly and she came across like such a nice & warm person. She is a class act in my opinion. Especially, when O'Reilly told her what Teresa Heinz said ("another 4 more years of hell"- when responding to supporters of the president near the rally she was at) and Laura said that no one likes to be heckled. And, even though she doesn't like to hear bad things about her husband or his campaign - she understands the frustration of trying to support your husband and get him elected.

I am really excited! We had this street fair for welcome week with tons of booths and one of them was the College Republicans. They had ghetto flyers for their upcoming meeting, but they said they'll have tons of Bush stuff. Also free pizza! The meeting is tommorow at 6 and I can't wait to go to and get involved! I'll let you know how it goes.

Today in the school paper they had a big front page article about Michael Moore - there is a chance he may be coming to the school to speak.

The thing is, UNL (Nebraska Lincoln) has a long history of controversies regarding using student fees to bring controversial speakers to the school, the point of lawsuits during the 70's!

I think now the rule is you have to have equal balance, i.e. if they bring Michael Moore, then they have to bring a conservative speaker.

http://www.dailynebraskan.com/vnews/.../412abef2363fd

Kind of an interesting article.

CR meeting was great! They have a lot of great things planned. And I got some Bush/Cheney stickers, hehe.

If you didn't see, I posted about Michael Moore. They might psend $40K in student fees to bring him to speak! Well suffice it to say, CR is planning a big protest if he comes! LOL I have been at this Uni. for a week and I am already mad about this!

This is a PUBLIC UNIVERSITY and I think it is WRONG to spend such a large amount of money to bring such a ONE SIDED, partisan person to speak. So far they have no plans to bring Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh to speak.
