Report: Disney Blocking Anti-Bush Documentary

Report: Disney Blocking Anti-Bush Documentary

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Oscar-winning filmmaker Michael Moore's documentary linking President Bush (news - web sites) with powerful Saudi families, including that of Osama bin Laden (news - web sites), is stirring up controversy even before its release.

Hollywood trade paper Daily Variety said in its Wednesday edition that Walt Disney Co. has moved to prevent its Miramax Films unit from distributing "Fahrenheit 911."

The Disney edict could herald the bloodiest political battle yet between Miramax's feisty co-chairman Harvey Weinstein and Disney CEO Michael Eisner, who oversaw the purchase of Miramax a decade ago, Daily Variety said.

"Fahrenheit 911," Moore's follow-up to his Academy Award-winning film "Bowling for Columbine, will still premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival (news - web sites) in France later this month. Rumors had been circulating of a July release date in North America, but the film does not appear on Miramax's summer schedule, the paper said.

It quoted a Miramax spokesman as saying that the company was "looking forward to resolving this amicably."

Officials from Miramax and Disney were not immediately available for comment on the report.

The NY Times is reporting that they're blocking it because it might "upset" Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and "endanger" Disney's tax breaks. It's pretty disgusting all around. It's obviously censorship.

It's not the first time this has happened to Michael Moore. While he was writing his book, Dude Where's my Country, he had trouble w/ his current publishing company and had to switch to a new one.

Will probably end up being released with another distributor; Kevin Smith's only blip in his relationship to Miramax came with Dogma (religious controversy), which he took to (I think) Lion's Gate.

It is the companies decision what it wants to go out under its name. I wouldn't watch it because I hate Michael Moore, but if he can find another company that is willing to publish it then whatever.

Michael Moore's the left's Ann Coulter, and he needs to dial down the rhetoric about five notches for me to be interested (though I enjoyed Bowling for Columbine). And it's not censorship - it's censorship when the government prevents you from releasing something, it's not censorship when a company exersices their right to prevent material they dislike from being released under their name.

Of course, what all this does is give Moore even more publicity, which is the last thing we need.

Censorship is any attempt to stifle speech.

I personally want to see it. Whether it's released through Miramax or another company, I think it'll get released somehow. I was watching, I think Fox News (could have been CNN but I forget) and they said Moore was told back in June that Disney did not want to release the documentary.

I think that with all the uproar over them denying this now, more people are going to be interested to see it and see what the big deal is about. So, if I were another company, I'd be v. interested in taking the movie on, because then I'd be getting more profit than if Disney had released it without a fuss.

But, I can kind of see Disney's point of view. Disney is an everybody company, and Michael Moore could be bad for business.

Personally, I like that guy, I find him hilarious, and I enjoyed Bowling for Columbine, so I'll go see this movie.

Its NOT censorship. The only people who can do censorship is the government. Companies do not have to release stuff they don't want to.

Disney isn't stifling speech. Michael Moore can go to another distributor. Disney is making a business decision; possibly they feel that being associated with this movie would be bad for business? Who knows. But it's not censorship.

And you don't think this republican administration and the fact that it is close to election time had absolutely any influence on this?

no, i don't think the "republican administration" has control over it. if they did they'd be sure as hell more likely to block the bad iraq stuff than an obvious left leaning policital documentary.

I saw that about Disney tax breaks and Florida. I imagine there is some potential there. Disney is also known for being relatively conservative. So...undoubtedly Lions Gate will release this film instead.

Related to what Avatar mentioned re: publicity - if Disney had just released the film thru Miramax (which many probably don't realize are even affiliated) then there would have been much less coverage and hype for the film. They've publicized the film for him, will end up finding a distributor this way, and have had made many question their motives. Who wins in this situation? Clearly, Michael Moore.

Avatar - interesting comparison between Ann Coulter and Michael Moore Very true - both hurt their cause more than they help it. Although, I personally find her much more offensive

What happened to free enterprise? Disney has all the right in the world to put its name to this project or not.

This is not stifling speech, its a business decision by disney, not to be associated with the project, Moore can find another distributor.
