What really frustrates me is when they use that to deny Catholics who are voting for Obama communion. This is NOT a practice condoned by the Vatican (it can't be; it's too blatantly a contradiction of Catholic doctrine- although I have to say, I don't see the Vatican doing much beyond saying "Eh, don't do that" and looking the other way when it happens), but it happened pretty frequently prior to the last election. And I don't even think Joe Biden has been allowed to take the Eucharist in years. It's completely unfair to give those who vote Republican a free pass on ignoring the death penalty and then punish those who vote Democrat (or in the case of Joe Biden, those who are running as a Democrat). Neither party lines up with Catholic doctrine. The heavy pushing of Republican party values in more recent years makes it seem like all they care about is abortion and gay marriage.

that is one thing that really never made sense to me. Why there is such a strange connection between beeing fundamentalist Christian (of whatever shade or kind) and being Republican Like you were saying, it is not exactly like Rep ideology fits with Christianity any better than Dem

Because their two primary social issues are abortion and gay marriage. Really, I can't think of another political ideal that fits.

I have to say that I was pretty disappointed with how the church responded to this as well. The things that I saw during the last election and the number of racist outbursts made by members of various churches really makes me wonder what "good word" is being proclaimed each week at their services. It's sad.

To be fair, I think we have to distinguish between the Church and individual churches. There are rotten apples in every basket. As far as I know, the Catholic Church had no official position on who should or should not be President.

I know this has nothing to do with the current discussion, but it is a Religious News Event, so I hated to start a new thread.

Did y'all hear about the shooting at the Baptist Church in Illionois? So sad. Some man just walked in and shot and killed the pastor.

Yeah, I saw that. It's so sad. I think they said the man that did it had some mental problems, which is no excuse, but I wonder what made him take it out on the pastor. I heard they "shared words" before the shooting so when the details come out it will be interesting to hear what happened.

It's so disturbing to hear about violence in a house of worship. It runs so counter to what faith is about.

Do we know what happened there?

I think the radio was saying that the gunmen didn't have intentions a first to shoot the pastor and then his gun jammed and he pointed it absentmindedly at the pastor. It was something like that.

Oh, that is just awful.

On the other hand, an excellent reminder that firearms help no one.

Oh, that would be horrible if the gun jammed and he accidentally shot the pastor. But why come in all black, with gun in hand, right up to the altar if you aren't intending on doing har?

I don't know how believable it is, but it wouldn't be the first time I'd hear of someone bringing a weapon some place in order to intimidate and scare people. I have never been around firearms in my life. As you well know, Car, they freak the living daylights out of me. So I don't know how realistic it would be for a person to bring a gun anywhere solely to be more intimidating...

But that's the only scenario in which this was an accidental shooting.

It's lucky the gun jammed. From what I heard, the gun he had was a Glock. I shoot a Glock. You can drop that thing in mud for a week, take it out, put in a magazine, and it'll shoot like the day you bought it. From what I heard, he got off four shots before the gun jammed. If it hadn't jammed, there would have been a lot more dead people in that church.

I guess there is a reason to be grateful and thankful for something in this whole mess after all.
