Recount: HBO Film about 2000 Election

Did anyone see this film? It just made me angry all over again. It's so sad to see how close we came to NOT having Bush as president and all the after effects of that decision.

There was so much corruption and plans to stall the counting, to stop it all together. The Republicans didn't necessarily "steal" the election (who knows, all the votes could have been counted and they still might have won) but they stopped all attempts to make it a fair and honest counting.

No I missed it, but hopefully I can catch it next time or dvr it.

That was my 1st time participating in an election & I can still remember staying up throughout the night & into the next morning waiting for the final result.

I stayed up all night for the 2004 election, and I can see myself doing the same for this one. I still remember having my government class my senior year of high school. This is the first presidential election I can vote in though because I was 17 in 2004. I imagine it was an interesting film, but since I don't have HBO I doubt I'll ever see it unless it comes out on video.

I didn't get to see it either. Same here - I'll have to wait until it comes out on DVD. It would be interesting to hear what people think about it though.

Being Canadian (and not one with either fancy cable or a sattelite dish, assuming that HBO is available on those, which it might not be, thanks to the CRTC), I didn't even get a chance to see it.

But I'm definitely keeping an eye for it when it comes out on DVD. It was incredibly well-received by critics, and everything I've seen and heard about it seems to indicate that it's a total must-see.

I saw it last night. It was a mixed bag for me. I thought some of the acting was hideous, but it got better towards the latter half. I actually videotaped that election night & the following days after up until Gore finally conceded. It was a very bitter experience. I can only hope that we learned something from it all.

I was too young to vote in the 2000 election, but I remember staying up and just waiting and waiting for them to announce something, anything. I haven't watched this yet, but I probably will tonight or tomorrow.

I was 17 in 2000 when the election took place and I remember being upset that Bush won (he went to my high school so they made a big deal about it but no one on campus had really voted for him). But I really didn't follow the nuances of that election so this movie was great for that. It really goes day by day and shows you all the maneuvering that each side did.

I really think everyone should try to see it if they get a chance.

I've never really understood why people get upset if their candidate doesn't win a presidential election. Life will still go on if your candidate doesn't win. Besides, people say your vote counts but it really doesn't when you think about it. The only votes that truely count are those from the electoral college.

I honestly don't understand why this movie was made. We already know the outcome. This movie will not change what happened.

The popular vote in a state determines who wins the electoral votes of that state.
It does matter and in the case of 2000 it lends credence to the argument that the electoral college should be abolished.

The 2000 election proved that the popular vote doesn't mean anything. Gore won the popular vote but lost the election.

That's right but Gore "lost" the popular vote in FL (or so they say) and that's what gave Bush the election. That and the Supreme Court. In Florida it mattered but overall it didn't.

I think the electoral college is an antiquated system - the election should go by the popular vote.
