Principal Turns To Duct Tape To Help Student Keep Pants Up

Principal Turns To Duct Tape To Help Student Keep Pants Up
By The Associated Press
(9/28/04 - DUNLAP, IN) — The father of a seventh-grader claims an assistant principal came up with a bizarre way to keep his son's pants from sagging in school: duct tape.

Scott Allison told the Concord School Board earlier this month that his 12-year-old son, Spencer, was ordered by a teacher to lift his shirt after she noticed the boy's underwear was showing above his pants, a violation of Concord Junior High School's dress code.

She sent him to Assistant Principal Patricia Walters, who told Spencer to pull up his pants and tuck in his shirt, Allison said.

"She then proceeded to duct tape his waist, three times around the waist," said Allison. "Then she sent him back to class, in front of his peers."

He said he worried his son would be mocked by his classmates at the school in the town about 20 miles east of South Bend.

"This outrages me and shocks me," Allison said.

Allison also said that Spencer's underwear would not have been exposed if the shirt was left down. "I don't understand what motivated her to ask him to lift up his shirt," he said.

Board President Randall Myers said the board would not discuss personnel issues in public. Junior high Principal Kevin Caird said student discipline is confidential.

What?! Since when?

That makes me think that something fishy is going on in that school that goes beyond duct tape.

Yeah, that does sound a little odd.

Duct tape? When I was in HS the teachers used string.

My middle school teacher would walk up and grab the guys by the belt loops and pull them up. Sounds alright to me. These guys are trying to make a statement, and the statement is Duh!

I agree, something about this just doesn't seem right.

But I agree that pants shouldn't be worn so low. It's disgusting sometimes.

That's weird. Why didn't she call the parents and send the kid home to change or suspend him or something? That sounds a bit more realistic than duct tape.

She just sent him back to class? That's so weird. The policy at schools are usually to send them home if they don't have the correct uniform right? I thought that's what it was.

Of course.

i don't know. i don't have a problem with what she did. she just helped him fix his little pants problem. and calling the parents won't stop the kid from doing this. it just gives them a day off of school. now i bet he won't wear his pants that low again.

I agree. I don't think it was that big of a deal to duct tape the pants. The student should have followed the dress code and then it would never have happened. At my high school if kids wore baggy pants the teachers would staple their pants to keep them up. So a little duct tape is no big deal.

I actually think duct tape is a good idea. You don't want to get embarrassed in front of everyone when you're 13, the kid might have leant his lesson.

I know a few guys who could use a bit of duct tape on their pants. When I was in high school, a guy actually lost his baggy pants in front of everyone. It was quite funny.

There's a lot that we probably don't know about this story, but I will say that there are better ways of disciplining kids without trying to embarrass them in the process. I also think it's a bit presumptuous to say that the parent couldn't solve the problem.

We had a rule where your pants couldn't drag on the ground, and a lot of students would wind up having their pant legs rolled up and stapled
