Also Wes Clark has been mentioned and Chuck Hagel from Nebraska. Hagel is a real long shot because he's a Republican. I think the ticket should be a straight party line. Also I don't like Hagel's take on social issues but he'd probably make a great Cabinet member.
They mentioned Hagel being a possible v.p. candidate on the news today. I didn't know that he was Republican, though. I don't think Obama could benefit from having him on the ticket.

The country already has a negative attitude about Bush so it might convert some voters to the other side, I guess.

McCain's latest ad really Paris Hilton, Britney, and Obama

Who knew someone so old could be that childish. He's getting nasty and reading the Hillary Clinto campaign book on nasty.

THEN if someone tries to get nasty about McCain it's "Oh that's not right....he's a war vet, he served his country, he was a POV"

Bush has had one of the worst approval ratings and has divided this country big time but McCain is still getting support from Republicans and conservatives. Obama needs to step it up.
Obama is black.

Therefore, that factor always needs to be considered in the polls and is probably the reason he isn't "annihilating" McCain.

Brittney Spears is a Republican isn't she? I saw her once proclaiming her allegiance to Bush.

Anyway that ad is pathetic and somewhat hilarious in a bizarre, God-awful way.

Another take on the polls is the way it's being presented or framed. CNN has Obama leading by 7 points but still moaning about why he can't pull away - considering he's the most popular celebrity in the world! Or so says McCain.

I still think it will be close at the end but the networks/media want a close campaign because that equals interest, high viewers and/or readers which makes everyone money.

No offense, but I don't think Britney Spears has much of a political opinion one way or another. Her swearing allegiance to Bush probably had more to do with the fact that patriotism was a good thing for her image than anything else.

Like I said, I don't put much weight into what any poll has to say so far away from the election, people change their minds all the time, events and time alter public perception every day... it's way too far away for any of it to mean much of anything right now.

As for why Obama can't totally destroy McCain at this point in time, I do think some of it has to do with his being black, I think some of it has to do with this stupid thing about his being an elitist (I'm with Jon Stewart on that want: I want my leader to be WAY smarter than I am and not the other way around), with these ideas that he might be a Muslim in disguise, etc...

I think it might also have to do with the fact that VPs haven't been announced yet either. Once the tickets have been revealed, I think we'll have a much clearer picture of where we really stand.

Well Spears and Hilton would both benefit from the current tax structure since it favors those who have higher incomes. In fact one of the arguments against making those tax cuts permanent for the wealthy is that you're helping Hilton and Spears keep more of their income. Or that you care more about them than the average working American.

But beyond that - McCain's ads are more and more Rovian - since early July Mr. Rove has been advising the campaign. I think we have to see whether Obama can fight back and not be passive as Kerry was in '04.

Yes, that issue is still a factor with Obama. Plus I think the whole supposed flip-flopping on certain issues like the withdrawal of the troops has been an issue.

I have to check out this ad that you guys are talking about. I can't believe McCain used those airheads in his ad.

Well if "flip-flopping" is the issue, than you know Rove is the brains behind the McCain campaign.

Too bad no one on the Dems's side has thought to point out that McCain (as like W before him) is the ultimate flip-flopper.

Too bad that none of them seem to be asking what the heck is so wrong about changing your mind on issues as situations changes and new information arises...

Gah.

That's true. I admit I was nervous about it at first but I understand why both candidates are doing it.

I just watched the ad that McCain's people released. I wonder if those two girls know that their image was just used to look like an idiot. I bet that flew right over their heads.

Maybe Paris will be flattered - who knows.

On CNN even the Republican talking heads are criticizing McCain's latest ad. It's gong to be a long 3 months till November and I'm sure we'll see much worse.

But Obama is reacting fairly well - he's saying that McCain talks more about him then he does about his own policies. The "oops he did it again" retort from the Obama campaign was funny.

It'll probably be years before they figure out what he did, I think.

The more and more McCain talks and gets desperate the more and more stupid he sounds. So he can make pointless comparision ads but anything Obama says they can say "oh he's playing the race card"

I have no use for McCain. Oh God I pray he is NOT my president

Well, a lot of people said they'd leave the U.S. if Bush got elected in 2004. Unless we're counting the troops, and they "left" for different reasons, there wasn't that big of an exodus.

We'll just have to wait and see.

But Obama better be careful. He's getting defensive and that is probably exactly what McCain wants him to do. If the voters see that, they may take those actions the wrong way. He needs to deal with it in an effective way and not allow the comments to get in the way of his mission to get elected.

How did Clinton (Bill) handle it again? I just remember that he was awesome at it, but I have no recollection of why that actually is.

Obama needs to strike the right balance, though. Kerry, in my humble opinion, should have done a better job of squashing the supercilious criticism launched his way by the Bush campaign. Mind you, it's always hard to go up against an incumbent, always more so in times of war. Still, while I totally agree that Obama can't make become defensive (especially as he's got nothing to be defensive about), I do think he needs to find a way to address the criticism.

Address it and dismiss it.
