WEST MANCHESTER TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A York man was charged with shooting a pregnant woman late Sunday night.

Police said Noel Gomez (pictured, left), 19, shot the woman because he simply wanted to kill somebody.

Julia Cook, 21, of New York, remains hospitalized at York Hospital. She is listed in serious condition after being shot in the head with a shotgun.

Gomez said he didn't know the victim, but was just was looking for someone to kill, according to court papers.

Gomez had his hands and legs shackled as police brought him before a district justice Monday morning.

Police said Gomez, a ninth-grade York city drop out told them he was planning on shooting and killing someone.

When he saw Cook walking to her car in the parking lot of a Giant supermarket in West Manchester Township Gomez allegedly opened fire with a shotgun.

Cook, who was six months pregnant, was shot in the head. Gomez allegedly told police it was his intent to kill her.

"It makes absolutely no sense. This was a real danger of him continuing this beyond what happened last night," York County District Attorney Stan Rebert said.

About six hours after the shooting, the suspect's car was spotted a few miles away at motel along Route 30.

Rebert credited York County Detective Matt Millsaps with finding it.

"He just took it upon himself to look at every parking lot and motel and he nailed him," Rebert said.

According to the York School District, Gomez dropped out of the ninth grade in 2003. A spokesperson said he didn't attend much school.

Rebert said the suspect reminds him of serial killer Mark Spotz. He said if the victim does not survive her injuries, he will seek the death penalty for Gomez.

Cook's husband is currently serving in Iraq.

It's scary to think we live in a world where you could get killed simply because someone felt like killing.

Geez, that story was horrible enough until the final line. I really hope she survives and is able to live a normal life, especially for her baby. I know that if she is brain dead but on machines, they can let her carry to term and have a healthy baby.
What happens to someone to make them wake up one day and just decide they want to kill someone else? It baffles me.

I read a follow-up story yesterday that said she was still alive, still in critical but stable condition. The father said they are still optimistic about her and the baby seems to be doing ok so far. I don't know if that's changed yet.

They said that they're trying to push for the death penalty for the kid who shot her, too.

Well if she doesn't die the death penalty wouldn't fit. Unless she becomes a vegitable or suffers permenant brain dammage. In either case I kind of think the death penalty is letting them off the hook.

I just don't think the death penalty fits in anywhere period.

This guy is sick but should be institutionalized for sure. He needs some help.

This is the type of stuff that makes me sick to my stomach.

My heart goes out to this woman and her husband. Poor man, imagine fighting in Iraq only to find out that his wife's been shot in the head back home for no reason other than a stranger just wanted to kill someone, and on top of all that she's carrying their child.

This guy is 19 and was in 9th grade as late as 2003? Maybe he wants to be locked up cause of his situation?

I got the impression that the ninth grade was as far as he got in his education before he dropped out.

But this guy obviously has problems and I really hope they give him a proper evaluation. And I hope even more that the woman will be okay, she's 21, 6-months pregnant and her husband is in Iraq. It's a horrible thing to happen.

That's what I was thinking. Sad if people have to go to such extreme measures to get attention.
