Possible Suicide at WTC site over Election Results

Quote:
NEW YORK (AP) -- A 25-year-old from Georgia who was distraught over President Bush's re-election apparently killed himself at ground zero.

Andrew Veal's body was found Saturday morning inside the off-limits area of the former World Trade Center site, said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

A shotgun was found nearby, but no suicide note was found, Coleman said.

Veal's mother said her son was upset about the result of the presidential election and had driven to New York, Gus Danese, president of the Port Authority Police Benevolent Association, told The New York Times in Sunday's editions.

Friends said Veal worked in a computer lab at the University of Georgia and was planning to marry.

"I'm absolutely sure it's a protest," Mary Anne Mauney, Veal's supervisor at the lab, told The Daily News. "I don't know what made him commit suicide, but where he did it was symbolic."

Police were investigating how Veal entered the former World Trade Center site, which is protected by high fences and owned by the Port Authority.
Thoughts? Opinions? I detest suicide, but I've been feeling really depressed lately. Not nearly that depressed though. I think that's a little overdramatic, but at the same time, I'm not that shocked.

People that commit suicide over a democratic election, they must have been really not so right in the head.

It's unfortunate that someone would be that affected and depressed by an election. Sigh. I was depressed, too, but then I just decided to buck up and move on.

Yeah, I wouldn't have gone that far. I wouldn't have even moved. I think I've already said this here, but I won't do anything drastic until Bush actually does something, not just because he exists. Everyday I think I've "bucked up" then I wake up and see my Kerry sign in my room and I get this bittersweet feeling.

That is sad. And to me it looks like his suicide wasn't about the election. He probably had deeper, darker issues. But the election was just the last straw and it set him off. It's really sad, I feel bad for his family.

What? Did no one see him pull out a shot gun before he killed himself?

Yeah, I agree. He must not have been right in the head, and when I person is that depressed it can be almost anything that can set them off.

this guy really had some major issues if he decided that something as petty as Bush's re-election was the final straw.

Ok, i don't like Bush as much as the next person but i'm not going to kill myself just because he's president again. That guy was obviously off to begin with.

that's insane! no matter what's goin' on in the world, suicide is never the answer to anything. I agree that he must have been troubled from way before the election results.

I'd like to believe he has more important things to worry about, like running a country, war, etc. then concern himself with a single suicide.

Sure. But still, I would think part of him--the human side--would care about this.

If someone killed themselves because of something I did, a part of me would feel to blame.
