Police use stun gun on 6-year-old
Officials: Child was cutting himself with glass
Friday, November 12, 2004 Posted: 8:25 AM EST (1325 GMT)

MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- Police used a stun gun on a 6-year-old boy in his principal's office because he was wielding a piece of glass and threatening to hurt himself, officials said Thursday.

The boy, who was not identified, was shocked with 50,000 volts on October 20 at Kelsey Pharr Elementary School.

Principal Maria Mason called 911 after the child broke a picture frame in her office and waved a piece of glass, holding a security guard back.

When two Miami-Dade County police officers and a school officer arrived, the boy had already cut himself under his eye and on his hand.

The officers talked to the boy without success. When the boy cut his own leg, one officer shocked him with a Taser and another grabbed him to prevent him from falling, police said.

He was treated and taken to a hospital, where he was committed for psychiatric evaluation.

"By using the Taser, we were able to stop the situation, stop him from hurting himself," police spokesman Juan DelCastillo told The Miami Herald.

The case was under review.
Oh my God I can't even imagine what was wrong with this child. It's so sad.

I don't even know what to say. But it sounds like the Police officer did the right thing with protecting the child and the others in the area. How and why does a a six year old decided to try and hurt themself? How sad, hopefully he gets the help he needs.

Yes, I mean ... What else can you do when the child is threatening to cut himself with glass? And obviously he would carry through with it, because he cut his face and leg ..

I just wonder what this kid's home life is like, or what's really going on in his mind that made him to that .. it's terribly sad.

Wow. That's just wow. But couldn't they have hosed him off or something instead.

It is really sad that a six year old is actually thinking about hurting himself. He should be watching Spongebob, or going outside and scraping his knees when he falls off his bike.

I heard this story, but I was under the impression that the cuts were accumulated because he was waving the glass around and accidentally cut himself, not because he took the glass to his body and sliced.

How many times have you walked out in front of a bus, been knocked over, and killed? It's pretty frustrating, isn't it?

This is messed up - It makes me feel sick that they would use a stun gun on a six year old child. WTF! And the kid needs help not being stunned.

Any other country it would be child abuse. I did not realize schools in America were so violent. We never had metal detectors or security at my school. We had police liason constables that would show up once or twice a month. Maybe all this violence in America comes from the schools being violent to students? But what do you expect from a country that still allows 22 states to beat kids with boards? mind boggling.
