Plane crashes into Hudson River

All cable and broadcast networks are reporting this at the moment. Apparently a flock of geese flew into it.

I heard about this on the radio! I don't think anyone died, but the geese disabled two engines.

There is a neat picture of passengers standing on the wings of a floating plane here:

Thank God nobody died.

I know! I'm watching CNN. It's truly a miracle that EVERYONE survived. Truly incredible!

Nah, not a miracle. Not quite anyway.

Just the amazing talent of a wonderful pilot. He's the hero in this story. Of course, I imagine he (or she) will say they were just doing their job.

I'm so happy that everyone came out okay! However, I think my fears about flying have been further cemented by this story.

I still have a fear of flying. Although my dad said that if I can survive flying through a bad storm then I can survive almost anything while flying.

I'd love to know what idiot decided that it was okay for the small plane we were in fly in a terrible storm. People were quite freaked out because of all the shaking going on which didn't help me any.

Ironically, on the way home, the same airport that thought it was okay to fly through the storm delayed our plane going back an hour and there was no storm at all going on at the time!

I hate flying because I need to be in control of how I'm getting somewhere - I guess.

Did u hear about this crazy story? I also posted it on the Strange Findings thread:

I'm just speechless - making money on someone else's misery.

It's still safer to fly than to drive. Exponentially more people are killed in cars on the roads every day then are killed in airplanes. These kinds of things happen, but they happen very rarely, and when you have a well trained pilot, which many are, then the bad situations can sometimes be averted. I was flying the same day this happened. I still felt safe. You can't paint all airplane rides with a brush of bad mojo because of a couple bad examples.

Yeah, I love flying. I love it. I prefer small planes usually, because my dad (and a bunch of other people along with him) owned a couple while I was growing, and he used to take me, so I grew up with the air pockets and the turbulence.

The first time I took a commercial flight, the stillness freaked me out a bit, but I got over it pretty quickly.

I think air accidents are inherently more spectacular and can result in more tragic circumstances by virtue of the nature of this mode of transportation (high altitudes, weight of the crafts, etc.), but car and train transportation is statistically way more dangerous.

Well, I had a pretty terrifying plane experience when I was 10 so flying hasn't been the same for me. At least in a car or on a train, you have the option of jumping off but on a plane, you're life is pretty much in that pilot's hand. and let's hope that the pilot isn't drunk either.

Sunny, that's really cool. I need to consider those Fear of Flying classes.

I don't know how effective those Fear of Flying classes are.

It's a weird thing, for me, that I'm the one not afraid of something, because I have so many phobias ordinarily. But, yeah, I've nevr been afraid of flying.

I've wracking my brain trying to remember what other airplane incident this reminded me of, and I finally found it.

In 2001, an Air Transat flight between Toronto and Lisbon, Portugal, ran out of fuel (there was an internal leak in the motors) at some point over the Atlantic Ocean, while at an altitude of a thousand feet. And, with no motors, save for some sort of emergency electrical fan-thing, the pilot (Robert Piché) managed to keep the plane in the air for 19 minutes and then landed it safely and without incident on an air strip in the Azores.

Air Transat Flight 236 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And the reason I link the two incidents is because, when Mr. Piché came back to Montral, he was given a hero's welcome, but he said he was just doing his job and putting his training to good use. Though there's no way to no for sure, I have a feeling Cpt. Sully will express the same sort of sentiment.

I heard the passangers each got 5000 dollars compensation for their lost belongings. I just hope not too many people lost priceless memories and things.

^ I hope they didn't lose anything of sentimental value either.

Did anyone catch the interview with some of the passengers on Ellen today? After they shared their story, I was left stunned. It's a miracle that they're alive.
