Paying By Fingerprint At The Supermarket

Mon Mar 14,10:31 AM ET

Berlin (Reuters) - Customers of a German supermarket chain will soon be able to pay for their shopping by placing their finger on a scanner at the check-out, saving the time spent scrabbling for coins or cards.
An Edeka store in the southwest German town of Ruelzheim has piloted the technology since November and now the company plans to equip its stores across the region. "All customers need do is register once with their identity card and bank details, then they can shop straight away," said store manager Roland Fitterer. The scanner compares the shopper's fingerprint with those stored in its database along with account details. Edeka bosses said they were confident the system could not be abused.

Famous last words?

I really don't get what is wrong with cards and money.

That seems like a horrible idea to me. It is incredibly dangerous to have something like that connected directly to your bank account.

Besides having a huge potential for abuse, it also seems like a violation of civil liberties.

I use my fingerprint at the video store, but I don't pay with it...it's just in stead of the member card...wouldn't feel comfortable linking my fingerprint to my bank account quite yet I think....maybe in 15 years....

Me either ? I mean don't get me wrong, I love online banking and such, but having my fingerprint be the access to my bank account is taking it a little far. A lot of this new technology is just stuff we don't really need but they try and convince consumers that it will save so much time, etc.

Not a good idea if you ask me. And it reminds me of the Left Behind books.

it sound like a good idea, but I don't think I would have trusted my fingerprints to a shop

I still haven't got my prints on any form of computer or bank, and I'd like to keep it that way.

That is a good idea. At least you wont have to worry about your card number and pin being stolen.

Instead, it's your fingerprint. Which can be handy - thats one of the key identifications in a criminal case - somebody is murdered, they put your fingerprint on the scene, thus the police think you did it. That can't happen with a card and pin.
