O.J. Simpson sentenced to at least 15 years

By KEN RITTER, Associated Press Writer Ken Ritter, Associated Press Writer – 4 mins ago

LAS VEGAS – A broken O.J. Simpson has been sentenced to at least 15 years in prison for a Las Vegas hotel armed robbery by a judge who rejected his apology and said, "It was much more than stupidity."

Simpson stood stone-faced Friday when Judge Jackie Glass quickly rattled off his punishment after he pleaded with her that he didn't mean to steal from anybody when he tried to retrieve memorabilia.

He appeared ready to break down in tears as he told that he was "sorry and confused" before going into a rambling and emotional 5-minute declaration.

"I didn't want to steal anything from anyone ... I'm sorry, sorry," he said.

Glass ruled before sentencing that Simpson cannot be freed on bail pending possible appeal.

The guy didn't spend one dime to find the people who killed his ex-wife and her friend and now he's sorry. From the sound of his apology, I think O.J. was quite surprised he was actually found guilty of this charge.

That's because he already knew who killed them.

LMAO. Exactly. Was he going to hire a PI to...find himself? It wasn't for lack of evidence that he didn't get convicted, it was for lack of ADMISSABLE evidence.

Very true. All that for some sports memorabilia? Sheesh, see you in ten years.

First, I want to make clear that like the majority of you, I firmly believe OJ killed his ex-wife and Ron Goldman in 1995.

However, what bothers me is the fact OJ might be going to jail for the "wrong reasons". Let me explain.

In our system of law, you cannot be tried for previous crimes. They should have no legal bearing on your current trial/charges. I think Ron Goldman's parents being allowed to sit in the trial unjustly influenced the jury's decision and essentially violated the law (make past criminal activity relevant to the present).

The reason I believe this is because had this been "Joe The Plumber" (not OJ Simpson) he probably would have gotten a slap on the wrist and been on his way. I think he was sentenced based not on the merits of the sports memorabilia case, but the fact everybody has been wanting to put OJ behind bars because they *think* he killed his ex-wife and her boyfriend 13 years ago. That is not considered "fair" or legal in how our justice system is set up...

I say thank God for Ron Goldman's parents as well as his sister for seeking what small justice they could after he brutally murdered their son.

Put yourself in their shoes. What if someone killed your child in such a brutal way, walked away from it, was found guilty in a civil trail where he never paid a dime to them, then a few years later you found a way to put him where him belongs.

Right or wrong? I don't care.

YES I totally think the fact that he murdered two people had a lot to do with why he is going to prison now, and I for one am HAPPY about that. His first trial was a JOKE and now karma got him back.

Actually, his sentence is pretty standard for the charges. If he'd gotten life, THAT would have been being punished for previous crimes.

That said, I don't care. LOL. Fair or no. Fry his ass for it for all I care. The man is more animal than human. He shouldn't be allowed in the general population. That's why I'd be a bad juror, lol. I'd STILL be there, rather than let him off for those murders.

This is true... But did he get sentenced because of the crime? Or because of WHO he is?

So, using "LOL" indicates this is all some big joke to you? Wow. The arrogance and ignorance of the internet never ceases to amaze me...

Alright, play nice everyone. Just because someone expresses an opinion that is wildly different from our own does not mean they're being arrogant or ignorant.

As to whether OJ was sentenced because of who is he rather than the crime committed... he was arrested for a crime, he was given a fair trial for said crime, and then he was sentenced within the limits of the presbribed punishment for said conviction... I don't know if it would ever be possible for the man to have a trial where his past is completely outside the minds of every single individual involved. But, bearing that in mind, I think he got as fair a treatment as can be expected for the crime he stands convicted of having committed.

It was armed robbery, after all. I understand he's eligible for parole in six years. The rest is up to him.
