Nurse kills intruder with bare hands

In news stories like this, I'm never too sure on who's really guilty.

Police: Nurse, 51, kills intruder with bare hands
POSTED: 3:36 p.m. EDT, September 8, 2006

PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) -- A nurse returning from work discovered an intruder armed with a hammer in her home and strangled him with her bare hands, police said.

Susan Kuhnhausen, 51, ran to a neighbor's house after the confrontation Wednesday night. Police found the body of Edward Dalton Haffey 59, a convicted felon with a long police record.

Police said there was no obvious sign of forced entry at the house when Kuhnhausen, an emergency room nurse at Providence Portland Medical Center, got home from work shortly after 6 p.m.

Under Oregon law people can use reasonable deadly force when defending themselves against an intruder or burglar in their homes. Kuhnhausen was treated and released for minor injuries at Providence.

Haffey, about 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, had convictions including conspiracy to commit aggravated murder, robbery, drug charges and possession of burglary tools. Neighbors said Kuhnhausen's size -- 5-foot-7 and 260 pounds -- may have given her an advantage.

"Everyone that I've talked to says 'Hurray for Susan,' said neighbor Annie Warnock, who called 911.

"You didn't need to calm her. She's an emergency room nurse. She's used to dealing with crisis."

Wow.. She handled that a lot different than most people. So sad she had to go through that and I'm glad she's fine.

Advantage indeed.

Well, as long as they don't get charged for applying the deadly force.

Ok, I shouldn't laugh about this! but I heard about this on the 11 o'clock news and it struck me as soooo weird. I mean, this is my town so I hear about weird stuff like this. But hey, If I found someone in my house I can't say I wouldn't take matters into my own hands either. I'd probably grab one of my knives though. Or run and scream because I'm a wuss.

If you found a stranger with a hammer in your house, you would feel guilty because you just defended yourself?

Of course, intrudors and burglars don't deserve the death, but I don't think you could charge her for his death...

No. I'm not saying she should be charged for his death. It's just I've heard before that people who defend themselves have gotten charged.

She killed him and got away with it? Shocking... That's like killing murderers to prove that murder is wrong. It's just... just... it just doesn't make sense. If she'd just hurt him, or if he actually attacked her, I could understand it more. The way I read this he was breaking into her house so she strangled him. She could've called the police, or hit him unconcious. We haven't really had any similiar cases here as far as I can remember, but she probably would've been charged as you aren't allowed to kill people breaking into your house. The police aren't even allowed to kill someone (or I think they are allowed to shoot at someone who shoots at them first, but not the other way). If they do, they probably don't get into jail, but they will probably lose their job or at least get de-graded. Which I think is good. Killing is a primitive way of dealing with things, it's how they did it in the stone age when someone tried to steal their food. We're far past the stone age.

Well, the thing is, under Oregon law, you are allowed to use deadly force if an intruder breaks in to your house. But I'm not certain to what extent.

Just heard on a preview for the nightly news that the intruder was actually a hitman hired by her husband to kill her. No wonder she used such force.

If I were her, I'd use some force against my husband too. Just not enough to kill him of course
