Northern White Rhino near extinction

I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the Off Topic forum. I live in the San Diego area where we get the San Diego Zoo magazine, Zoonooz. I was saddened to hear that there are apparently only twelve Northern White Rhinos in the world, four in the wild and eight in zoos. Worse, those in zoos are already past reproductive age.

The Northern White Rhino lives in that section of central Africa that is always plagued by civil strife, and it has often been a victim of poachers because of a belief that its horn can act as a aphrodisiac. If there was anything to this, all we'd have to do is bite our own fingernails, because they're made of the same material.

It's always sad to see a unique species disappearing.

This is so sad. Are they going to save genetic material from the living rhinos, with the possibility of cloning them when the technology is perfected?

Hey, it worked with the whales in STAR TREK IV ...

On a real-life footnote, I believe they did clone a sheep recently.

They cloned a sheep quite a while ago, actually. But there are still some bugs in the system. For one thing, she was pretty much "born" at the same age as her DNA donor, and died a few years later accordingly. Her name was "Dolly".

There's a rather extensive article about her on Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolly_the_Sheep.

That is awful I would love to hear what kind of a system they have a in place to help them reproduce.

This kind of story makes me so angry! And, what's worse is that 4 rhinos are nowhere close to being a large enough population to sustain the species indefinitely.

Maybe this will be the wake up call to people, to make them realise we have to do something NOW about all the species that are severely endangered and on the brink of extinction.

Long live Leonard Nimoy. That's all I can say, the guy's a genius.

I still have this thread on my tracked list, and I'm afraid the news is not good. According to Wikipedia the species is now extinct in the wild and there are only two zoos which house the remaining captive animals.
