No more televised Victoria Secret shows

I found this on AOL news:

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Victoria's Secret is dropping its nationally televised fashion show this year, at least partly because of criticism following Janet Jackson's breast-baring faux pas at the Super Bowl.

Ed Razek, chief creative officer for the Columbus-based lingerie chain, said Saturday the main reason for the decision was so the company can look at new ways to promote the brand.

Still, he said, "We had to make the decision probably six to eight weeks ago when the heat was on the television networks."

The announcement came less than three months after the Jackson uproar and a week after federal regulators proposed $495,000 in fines against Clear Channel Communications for sexual material on the Howard Stern show.

The televised fashion show has generated criticism in the past from groups complaining about supermodels strutting down the runway in skimpy underwear.

A message left Saturday at the New York office of CBS, which has televised the show the past two years, was not immediately returned.

Olga Vives, vice president of the National Organization for Women, praised the cancellation, saying the show only objectifies women.

"We're concerned young women think they have to look this way," Vives said, adding she hoped the cancellation is permanent.

"There are many other ways to promote their product."

The fashion show, which aired in November the last two years, was televised on ABC in 2001. The first show was broadcast online in 1999; 1.5 million visitors tried to log on at once, bringing the site down within 20 minutes.

Victoria's Secret has $4 billion in annual sales.

Man, it was a boob. They need to get over the stupid Superbowl incident

This censorship thing is going WAY too far. Kudos to Alanis Morrisette for spoofing US censorship at the Canadian Junos.

I think it's cool. It's basically just a booty show anyway. How many women would actually watch that in order to scope out some new underwear?

I don't understand why they would take it off. Anyone interested in fashion might watch it. And of course guys watch it. But what is wrong with that? I mean, if you're going to take the Victoria Secret show off, you might as well take the Miss America pageant off because of the swimsuit portion. This is just rediculous.

Well Victoria's Secret is just caving in, if you ask me.

Anyways let's just blame it all on Janet Jackson. That's fun. And she sucks. And can't sing. And should just disappear. And looks like the lead monkey in Planet of the Apes.

lol over here (the uk) we thought the whole JJ thing was a total joke. Its blatent hypocrisy the music industry/ film industry sells sex- the majority of it being half naked females.
But aside from that too much censorship is wrong; but then again I think parading a loada half naked slim females isnt a great idea either.
So why cant they do an undie show with half naked women and men--> that seems like a happy compromise

Well, I guess to me, I just think that's kind of besides the point. I really think everyone is using the JJ thing as a scapegoat and going too far with censorship.

Whether or not I think VS shows are in poor taste or not doesn't deter from the fact that it wasn't socially unacceptable UNTIL the JJ incident.

And THAT is where I have the problem.

As for VS. dunno never seen them. they don't get to this side of the great divide but on the whole i'd say it was an overreaction

Good; it pre-empted Gilmore Girls last time and I was annoyed
Personally I dont understand why it's shown on TV anyways Well, I do, kind of, I'm sure there's quite an audience for supermodels wandering around in little bits of underwear, but I don't think tha's what belongs on most TV channels, personally.
If the reason is because of Janet Jackson's thing, that's kind of stupid, I thought people were over that-? But generally I can't really say I'm displeased they won't be showing it anymore.

This whole Nipplegate ***** is the stupidest thing the industry has ever been worried about I'm sick of it. It was a damn nipple and it was covered! They show more T&A on NYPD Blue every week and half the other Primetime shows! Forgive me, I'm a strong supporter of anything related to VS I love their stuff! I buy my lingerie and shoes from them all the time.

Watch out, boys and girls; bloody mutilation and violent gunplay are safe, but breasts destroy your moral fabric!

All the ladies who like to wear angel wings in public are probably really upset...

Oh no, whatever will we do. One less television show exploiting women. Damn, what is this world coming to. Come on all you PC people out there. Who cares if the world has some morals? Honestly, I don't care if ten million guys miss the chance to get a woody looking at a bunch of half naked girls on TV. If they want to do that they can pay for it, just like females do. I mean look, full frontal female nudity, the movie's rated R. Male nudity, it's NC-17.
