Newborn Mauled To Death By Pet Dog When Grandma Left Him Alone
By The Associated Press
(10/06/04 - JACKSONVILLE, FL) — A 5-week-old baby left alone by his grandmother died after being mauled by the family dog.

Jose Diaz was on a bed Tuesday when the dog jumped up and attacked him. Police believe a 7-year-old mutt hurt the boy, though officers also found two other dogs in the house.

The baby had bites on his face and head when his parents, both 19, brought him to a fire station after the attack. He was taken by helicopter to Shands Jacksonville hospital, where he later died.

Sun Woodjinski, 49, was supposed to be baby-sitting the boy. The baby's mother, Jennifer Woodjinski, was working at a nearby Taco Bell and his father, Albert Diaz, did yardwork.

The mutt belonged to Jennifer Woodjinski, but she left the dog at her mother's home when she moved away and had her baby.

Homicide detectives were investigating, but it appeared the death was accidental, Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokesman Ken Jefferson said. It was unclear what would be done with the dogs.

She left a five week old baby on it's own. On a bed. Unprotected. As far as I'm concerned she should have been mauled, maybe she could have protected herself.

This is why I hate dogs. I never trust them and never will. They smell, they bark, they crap, they pee, they whine, and they maul people.

The word maul is interesting to its....weird sort of.

Who in their right mind leaves a baby on a bed alone? I mean, come on! I personally don't think anything should happen to the dog, but for the person who was to be babysitting, I think that's a different story.

Well if the baby's sleeping, its not that uncommon, especilly if she has no crib. Why she left it with a DOG is another story.

The fact that she left the baby on the bed sleeping isn't the bad part. A baby that young wouldn't be able to roll over yet most likely so the baby couldn't have fallen. But she should NOT have left the baby with the dog, she should be charged with negligent manslaughter.

Why are they wondering what to do with the dog? Obviously it is dangerous and should be put to sleep. I wonder what kind of dog it was?

It's always easy to Monday morning quarterback. I don't think this should be considered as anything other than an accident ... of course she could have, and should have, locked the dog up, but that's hindsight, and that's always 20/20. You can't guard kids, even so small kids, 24/7, and you never imagine something like this happening, so I wouldn't charge her with negligatory manslaughter.

Where exactly did the grandmother go?

Was she still in the house? Could she not hear the baby screaming and get him help?

It seems rather odd that his parents (who were not there at the time) took the baby to a fire station. What that leads me to believe was that the grandmother left the house entirely, leaving a helpless baby alone. Otherwise, if she was there, why didn't she get help?

I wish there were more details to this story because if the grandmother left the house, then I say bring on the negligent manslaughter.

Another thing to consider is that you cant always tell if a dog would attack or not. Maybe the dog had never been around little kids, therefore the parents couldn't know that would happen. But as a general rule i wouldn't leave kids alone with any pets, the kid might provoke the pet to attack...

There is neglect here but I dont think anybody wanted the baby to die and to die in such away. Just think how the Grandmother must be feeling now.

I know that. It was just my first reaction. Here in New Zealand dogs have become more violent and attacked children just out of the blue so I guess more people are protective and more mindful of dogs and leaving theirs and others kids, guess not elsewhere.

This is why dogs need to be socialized from the time they are puppies. But either way you should never leave a baby alone with a dog. I have 4 dogs and I will never leave them in a room alone with another kid or person no matter how old they are. It's not that I don't trust my dogs but you never know what can happen.

That's total negligence! Babies are NOT to be left alone for any reason whatsoever, especially when there are other pets/dogs etc in the house.

So I take it you'll be sleeping in the same room as your baby for the first 12 months of its life?
