| New Iraqi government What does everyone think about the transfer of power upcoming? I know the US did not want Al-Yawer to be president, but he was the choice of the council, and could really help bring the country together, I guess he is the leader of the biggest sunni tribe. The new prime minister is a ****e, and the deputy prime minister is a kurd. Good to see all the different parts of the country represented in the new government. Hopefully the quicker/smoother the transition goes, the quicker we can bring our boys home. __________________ This space for rent. | |||

| The dilemma that Iraq is... It is a more complicated situation. The current iraqi government is just an interim goverment until the future democratic elections in the country (which is still uncertain considering the current situation of chaos and terror, and constantly postponed). In the meanwhile, the interim goverment, although it had been chosen among the diverses ethnic groups in Iraq, has no sovereign power. The UK and UK say that it will be sovereign though in practice this interim governement will not be able to make or change any basic law. The US and UK have however recognized that they could hardly call the government "sovereign" if it does not have the ultimate right to ask foreign troops to leave and have some control over security policy. To make it brief, the interim government (neither will the new governement that will be voted during the future democratic elections, if there are some) will not have its say in matters of security, law, and because of the contracts on Iraq reconstruction that was made public last year, they won't even have a say in matters of construction and infrastructures, and some other areas, determined by different contracts. The interim goverment wants the sovereignty of power, but the US and UK said no to it. The last version of the US draft resolution on Iraq (the fourth to this day) has rejected France, Germany and China's suggestion that the interim government will have a say in the military actions and operations. Instead, the draft says the ties between the Iraqi government and US-led forces after the 30 June handover will be governed by an exchange of letters. (eh!) And contrary to popular belief, the situation hasn't been better in Iraq since the settlement of the interim Iraqi government. It's just less covered by US newspapers since there has been less US soldiers killed lately (since they withdrew from the most sensitive places), but there are still as many bombings on Iraqi populations and places. The chaotic situation in Iraq will perdure as long as the occupation troops will remain there. The interim goverment has been openly implying that it wanted the sovereignty of power, and the terrorists openly expressed their opposition to the interim goverment AND the occupations troops. And since the occupation armies have failed to secure the country until now, who knows what will happen in the next months until the democratic elections. I want to be optimistic because I want to see the end of this war, but I'm realistic, and the settlement of the interim government will not do miracles. The Iraqis have too much resentment against the Americans to accept their present and their interference in their country's ruling. Yet, a departure of the American troops, after all the chaos that their presence caused, would do no good either : the country will surely see a civil war rise; after all the years of tyranny, the whole concept of democracy is totally unknown to their inhabitants. And with the ghost of Al-Quaeda around, imagine what it would be. __________________ The difference between 'involvement' and 'commitment' is like an eggs-and-ham breakfast : the chicken was 'involved' - the pig was 'committed' | |||
