Nader concedes that he won't win a single state; but he's still staying in the race.

Nader Says He Can't Win Single State

Thu Oct 7,10:00 PM ET

By MARK JOHNSON, Associated Press Writer

ALBANY, N.Y. - Independent candidate Ralph Nader conceded on Thursday that he won't win a single state in the presidential election.

"Of course not, the system is rigged," the consumer advocate said when asked if he thought he could carry a state Nov. 2. Nevertheless, Nader is remaining in the race.

Democrats say Nader's candidacy in 2000 cost Al Gore the election as the third-party candidate took votes in states such as Florida and New Hampshire that were decided by razor-thin margins. This year, Nader is on the ballot in more than 30 states, including New York, and is suing for ballot access in several others.

Nader also took a swipe at Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards, calling him a "sniveling coward." Nader contended that Edwards failed to criticize Vice President Dick Cheney over limiting awards in medical malpractice lawsuits in their debate Tuesday.

Hundreds of prominent Democrats have called for Nader to drop out of the race and urged liberal voters not to support him. Feminist Gloria Steinem and two dozen other women's rights activists signed an open letter on Thursday urging women not to support Nader.

"This election is about ending the reign of George Bush (news - web sites) who is intent on dismantling and destroying all that we have worked for years to achieve," the letter says.

"In his current candidacy, Nader seems prepared to sacrifice progress on the issues that women care about — privacy, education, child care, health care, workplace equity and nonviolence at home and abroad," the letter continues.

Gloria Steinem is Christian Bale's step-mother. I always think that to myself whenever I read her name anywhere. Not, "Gloria Steinem -- women's rights activist" ...just "Gloria Steinem, Christian's step-mom!!"

And good for Nader for staying in -- double good for people who are going to vote for him. Not everyone can be "OMG yay" about Kerry and I'd hate to think that anyone was being pressured into changing their votes -- as if Nader supporters are stupid and incapable of realizing on their own that Nader can't win. Duh. They know that Nader's not going to win. Nader just said it himself. And yet they still want to vote for him because he's their candidate, the way Kerry is the candidate for a lot of Democrats. They feel strongly about him not about backing the candidate that will get Bush out of office, and that's their right.

I just wish there was a major fourth party, conservative alternative to balance things out -- for those people who are not "OMG yay" about Bush.

I wish there wre a 4th party candidate too. Variety is the spice of life they say....

We have 37 different flavors of Doritos, yet only two Presidential candidates who could actually win. On the Nebraska ballot there were 5 choices including Nader, and I think a few others I have never heard of. I thought that was pretty cool.

The system may be rigged but does Nadar actually believe that's the reason he won't get a state? He's a little delusional.

I'm glad he is staying in even through the democratic whining..."stupid nadar took Al's votes....whah whah whah.......

Didn't any of those democrats ever realize that if Kerry were a stronger candidate they wouldn't have to start petitions to get people to think about voting for him?

How about Republicans working with Nader to get him on ballots? Could it be that they are worried about how their candidate would do in a head to head battle with Kerry?

Good point. Although I don't think it makes much difference, because he seems bound and determined to get on no matter what anyone thinks.

I just find Nader irritating. He's not accomplishing anything. He's not helping to change the system at all. He's just wasting money. I don't think he will be taking many votes from Kerry, because anyone who feels strongly enough that they want to vote for Nader probably wouldn't vote for Kerry even if he was their only liberal-leaning choice anyway.

I believe that's called the Libertarian Party.

I completely agree with that statement. I think that Nader is a selfish egomaniac who definitely contributed to Bush's "victory" in 2000, and he doesn't seem to want to acknowledge or accept that the parade has passed him by.

Just my opinion, but I think he's doing his best to change things. And we're not sure that his run won't change things. A more left-leaning third party could possibly gain lots of ground...especially if Kerry wins and does just as bad in Iraq.

But anyway, Nader is fighting a hard fight. And you're right, he hasn't really accomplishing anything yet...the Democrats, and to a certain extent, the Republicans, have made sure of that.

Definitely contributed to Bush's victory? I disagree. Most of the true Nader supporters probably wouldn't have voted for Gore anyway. And besides, in the end, doesn't it really come down to the choice of the voters?

I like Nader, and good on him for sticking to his convictions. It's not the voter's job to lower his convictions and standards to vote for the lesser of two evils, it's the job of the candidate to rise to meet the voter's. If people don't think Kerry does, then vote for Nader - don't lower your standards into voting for the bad instead of the terrible, or the system will never change.
