Mother Accused of Abdandoning Infant in Toilet - Pleads Not Guilty

Not guilty plea in abandoned baby case By John Shiffman

INQUIRER STAFF WRITER A Mount Ephraim mother accused of abdandoning her newborn in a toilet pleaded not guilty to attempted murder today.

Officials charge that after Denise Marie Winner gave birth prematurely on Jan. 3, she placed the child in a toilet, where the girl laid for 30 minutes until her boyfriend rescued the infant.

The unidentified boyfriend had not known that Winner was 7 months pregnant, but heard a faint wail from the bathroom, officials said.

He scooped her from the toilet, where the child's body temperature had dropped to 82 degrees, and called 911, officials said.

The child, who weighed just 3 pounds at birth, is now in state custody and is doing fine, said Bill Shralow, a spokesman for the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

Doctors said that the baby would have died if it had remained in the cold water another 30 minutes or so.

Winner, 43, who has two other children from a previous relationship who live with their father elsewhere, is free on $200,000 bail. Under the terms of her bail, she is not permitted to visit the child.

If convicted, she faces up to 20 years in state prison.

Four years ago, New Jersey adopted a law that allows new mothers to drop off unwanted babies younger than 30 days at any police station or hospital emergency room.

Can you believe she pleaded 'not-guilty'? As if this could not have easily been a murder if her boyfriend hadn't been there.

I think in addition to life-sentences, these people should be sterilized by the government. I can't believe she has two other children, either.

True .. But imagine how mentally screwed-up they'll grow up to be, knowing their mother did this to their younger sister/brother. Yuck. I would never forgive my mother.

And I haven't read anything about insanity pleas, either.

Poor little baby. Not-guilty my ass. What did she think would happen to the helpless infant laying in a toliet?? It'd turn into a mermaid/merman?

I wonder how the bf didn't know she was pregnant? I guess she must have not showed..

That has always mystified me. How can someone be pregnant and NO ONE NOTICES? I know that some people "don't show"...that just seems impossible to me. Where the hell does the baby GO, then?

I think it's awful. If she's not found guilty of attempted murder she should at least be found guilty of profound stupidity.

What a horrible woman.

I understand that the child wasn't full term, but three pounds even at 7 months sounds very low... as if there was something else going on.

I know 4 pound babies at 9 months, so a 3 pound baby at 7 months is relativly large.

My cousin had a baby without knowing she was pregenant. Its possible.

I can't believe how all of you are attacking this woman as if she's some kind of monster. It seems fairly obvious to me that she was in denial about her pregnancy (though overweight women can sometimes go through an entire pregnancy without realising that they are in fact pregnant) and went into shock when she gave birth. She most likely has serious psychological issues going on and needs to be given treatment before this happens again.

This isn't impossible, obviously, since no one truly knows what kind of problem the mother has, however, I disagree based on the details we do know. If she was a 15 year old girl with limited knowledge and experience with childbirth, I could definitely see her suffering shock after giving birth and maybe doing something careless. But she wasn't, she was 43 years old and had given birth two previous times. It seems fairly obvious to me that she'd old enough and experienced enough to know that that is completely unacceptable.

And if it really isn't her fault, if she's mentally disturbed in some way or has underlying psychological issues, I would think it would have shown evidence of itself during her first two pregnancies, and maybe someone should have done something about it then, so that this kind of ***** would not need to ever happen.

That's disturbing. First a woman abandons her baby in a toilet and now a man has placed a six year old in an oven. The six year old died.

Man Accused Of Placing Child In Oven

Pierott is accused of killing Tre-Devin Odoms, whose body was found in an oven at his mother's home in April. Pierott had been dating the boy's mother.

Police said the oven's pilot light was not lit so there was no heat source to the oven, which was turned to 600 degrees.

According to a court document, Pierott believed the child was "draining the life" from his 2-year-old son, Jacory, and "he needed to kill Trey so that Jacory could breathe."

An autopsy report indicated the boy died from asphyxia due to smothering.

Pierott previously was found innocent by reason of insanity in 1998 for using a dumbbell to fatally beat his disabled 25-year-old sister.

She must have had irregular periods then. Even if she didn't know for sure, she had to suspect something. You really can't be pregnant without knowing something is going on... the baby kicking, etc..

I've had a baby so I know what I'm talking about.
