More Prisoner Abuse

Quote:
Photographs of the alleged abuse of Iraqi civilians by UK soldiers must not be allowed to "tarnish the good name of our armed forces", Tony Blair has said.
The pictures were "shocking and appalling", he told MPs during Prime Minister's Questions.

Twenty-two photos of alleged abuse were shown at the court martial of three Royal Regiment of Fusiliers soldiers.

I cannot believe this has happenned again. This time leading up to the elections is so sensitive and these images are going to do nothing to ease the tension.

Is the British Government open to investigating how far up the military chain the abuse/orders to abuse went?

Here it's been a complete whitewash with the seven soldiers being the scapegoats. Now they have received and will receive punishment (richly deserved BTW) but there's no way they acted on their own.

How is the British Government looking at the Geneva Rules of Convention?I think our new Attorney General thinks it's only torture if it kills or causes a major body organ to fail.

I think the same thing will happen in the UK. The soldiers will get punished(as they should be) but the 'top dogs' who ordered them to do it will get off scott free.

I'm not surprised. I think that the same thing that happened here is going to happen there.

Blair knows he's got a tough election to fight. His own Chancellor is getting support for a leadership takeover (a prominant union leader has come out for him, significant when you remember that Labour gets a lot of support from the unions) and Blair is facing a barrage of attacks from so many groups in this country its not funny.

I think he's going to have to make this a proper investigation - if he doesn't, he's going to face an even tougher battle at the election.

Yup, it's a bunch of crap, but that's usually the way it goes.

Well there actually was a report that came out in August that did say the problem or responsiblity went high into the DOD. Believe it or not it was the committee that was put together by the DOD that came to that conclusion. It didn't get that much publicity because it happened during the Olympics and the election.

As far as we know no one in any level at the DOD has been held accountable for Abu Ghraib. Also I don't believe any charges have been filed against those outsourcing companies that provided some of the interrogators either.

Its so annoying to me that this happens, I cant stand that the 'big guys' get away with things and the little men down below get all of the blame
