She got it pretty lucky. She probably won't even have to finish out her sentence.

I am glad she got time in jail as well, she deserved it. She should not get excused just because she had a TV show. She did something wrong that if a normal, non celebrity did, they would end up in jail as well.

As for the fines,i am sure Martha is going to have some moneyproblems since she stocks plummeted and i dont know how many people are going to want to buy the line of someone who is in jail, but she did start out with a lot of money.

I just believe she got what she deserved, she was cocky and thought that since she was Martha Swewart she would get off and all of America loved her, when infact that didnt happen at all.

I wish she got more. I hate the fact that my parents get me sheets from her company to have on my bed. It's very strange to me.

Even though people were saying how she could get like 10 years...i knew that it would never happend because it always seems like celebrities never get that kind of sentence. She is really lucky...i think that if it were anyone else, they would have gotten a lot more.

Yeah, I have Martha Stewart sheet on my bed right now. It doesn't go with my comforter set because the sheet to it (that goes right on the mattress) is being washed. My comforter set is not by Martha.

I think a regular person would have got more jail time, most definitely but I'm suprised she did get any. 5 months really is nothing though so..

Eh, we all knew it would go this way. I don't really care.

She's probably has potted plants that cost more than the fines so I bet it won't bother her much.

i agree and disagree. i think that if it were a non celeb who had done that, there wouldn't have been nearly as much investigation that would have lead to the trial. in my opinion, the prosecution wanted to make an example of her.
but i agree that once celebrities are convicted of a crime, they get a much lighter sentance than everyday people would. just look at Winona who didn't serve any jail time.

IMO, a "regular person" probably never would have gotten charged with it. First off, most regular people don't have the kinds of connections she does, OR the money. Her crime wasn't a regular person crime.

I personally think they went after her viciously to make some sort of point. But do you really think this is going to stop the executives from sharing information with their friends? Doubt it. I'm sure people do insider trading and get away with it every day.

Frankly I could care less if Martha was in jail or not. I just think jails are filled to the brim already, and I'd rather see the fet spots left filled with violent and dangerous offenders.

I think making her do community service, reimbursing the state for their costs involved with her case, and paying a very large fine (in the millions) would be better for us. I'm sure that would teach her a lesson.

ITA!! Hit em' in the pocket is what I say (and in the millions at that). Then maybe they'll think twice about doing such things again.

I was quite glad that she got time. I thought for the crime she committed, she deserved to face the consequences of her behaviour. However, after hearing of the particular jail that she is going to, made me think of a retreat or a nice little farm for a few months.
I think she did get off lightly compared to what her crime is. I think white collar crime is as bad as stealing and should not be brushed off with the line that a lot of executives.

I do agree with mh67511 in part. There are a lot of ppl in US jails. I remember hearing a statistic that 1% of the total population was in jail which is mind boggling. However, the issue is to look at why people commit crimes and try and prevent them not just change the manner of punishment from jail time to something.

However, the idea of paying a huge fine in my opinion is a good idea. I did hear a report that her fine was about 41,000. Thats all well and good but that would be like a weekly income to someone like her with her disposable income, so a huge fine would be a good idea because it would punish her in more ways. After all, providing her with the experience of jail provides her with a few more chapters in the book that she writing about her experience so she can help others who have been in her position.

I think any empathy, if I did have any, went out the door when I heard her press conference saying that it was simply "terrible". Terrible is that fact that people dont have any food to eat. Terrible is the fact that people in the world still die from curable diseases. Terrible is the fact that people are rapist. Terrible is NOT is not a woman being punished for the crime she has committed. Man the woman may have gotten off or a lenient sentence (if thats possible) if she had shown remorse for her crime and realise what she did was wrong. She hasnt done it and has painted herself a victim. Boo hoo, the heart bleeds.

Are you sure? Because I heard on the news that she wasn't going to a special jail or getting any special treatment. Anyways she's not a violent criminal so she's obviously not going to a maximum security prison.

Now I don't necessarily think she should get special treatment, but since she is a celebrity they should watch her to make sure none of the other inmates attack her or anything.
