Man Throws Woman Over Highway Overpass

Woman flung off Bush Turnpike overpass

After sending victim to her death, man jumps onto Central

06:42 AM CDT on Friday, June 11, 2004

PLANO – An argument between a Dallas couple turned deadly Thursday when the man threw his girlfriend over the 85-foot drop of a Bush Turnpike overpass, witnesses told police. Then he jumped, too, they said.

The woman, 21, landed on the hood of a car heading south on Central Expressway, was carried a short distance, fell off and was hit by another vehicle, Richardson police Sgt. Kevin Perlich said. She died at the scene. The man, 30, was taken to a Richardson hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police blocked off lanes on both Central Expressway and the Bush Turnpike. The Dallas County Medical Examiner identified the man as Paul Stephens, 30, of Dallas. The woman's name was not released.

More than six witnesses told officials that they saw the couple arguing inside a parked 2000 Mercedes on the eastbound side of the Bush Turnpike just before 5 p.m., Sgt. Perlich said.

Henry Ford of Plano noticed the two as he and his wife were driving home from Carrollton. At first he thought two people were out "goofing around" on the turnpike bridge that overlooks Central Expressway.

"But pretty quickly I realized it was a man trying to throw a young lady off the freeway," he said. "I saw him trying to throw her over. And she was doing her best to stop him. She was fighting like hell."

Mr. Ford said he pulled over in front of the Mercedes and was getting out of the car when the man pushed the woman over the short wall.

A few witnesses told police that the man saw people coming toward him on the bridge and jumped. But Mr. Ford's wife, Frances, said she saw the man looking over the bridge at the woman's descent.

When she got to the wall just a few feet from the man, Ms. Ford said, she thought he was still holding onto the woman's arm because he had one hand dangling over the side and was looking downward. So she looked down.

"Then he jumped ... I saw him hit the pavement," Ms. Ford said.

Officials are unsure if the violence began elsewhere and escalated on the highway. The driver's side window of the Mercedes was broken, Sgt. Perlich said, adding that they aren't sure if that occurred at the scene or in another location.

It also wasn't clear if there was a history of domestic violence between the couple, who lived together in a Dallas apartment with a third person, Sgt. Perlich said.

"We are talking to roommates, places of employment to backtrack history ... and previous family violence," he said. "We are just trying to piece all of that together right now."

Gosh..I feel sorry for the girl. The terror of being flung over the edge of an overpass and then to be hit by a car.. :/ No one deserves that..

God that's depressing. It's even more tragic that the guy commited suicide. I feel so horrible for their families.

dude, i don't feel bad that the guy committed suicide. he knew that he was in deep *****, so rather than stand trial he just jumped like a little pussy. that makes me more mad than the fact that he tossed her off of the bridge.

Oh my gosh, he threw her over a bridge? *sigh* No argument is that bad. No one deserves to die like that... They were both too young to die, especially over an agrument.

thta's just awful. No one deserves to die by a crazied person and especially that way. I don't feel a bit sorry for the man. He obviously had many issues and the poor girl got caught up in it. I feel bad for her and that guy wow. People are crazy.

That guy has to be mentally defective or something. Honestly, it was just an argument, did you really have to KILL her and then yourself?

OMG, that really makes me sick to my stomach, thinking about what was going through her head, because she knew that she would not make it.... that is a tragic and horrific way to pass away. That makes me want to cry, seriously. I feel so bad for her family and even more terrible for the fact that she had to lose her life over a simple argument.

I thank god that I have someone terrific.
