Man Sues University After Professor Gave Him B-

(02/04/05 - LAS VEGAS, NV) — Bob Whitney isn't willing to accept a B-minus. He's suing the University of Nevada, Las Vegas after losing an appeal over the grade.

Bob Whitney, 52, alleges in the lawsuit that a history professor discriminated against him because of his conservative values. He seeks at least $10,000 for emotional duress, tuition, books and living expenses.

University officials say the complaint filed Jan. 12 in Clark County District Court has no merit.

Whitney said the grade he got in Eugene Moehring's class in spring 2004 damaged his grade-point average and made him ineligible for student loans. He claimed Moehring's fast-paced lectures prevented him from taking complete notes, and Moehring criticized his conservatism in written assignments.

Whitney accused Andrew Bell, then a graduate coordinator, of refusing to change the grade and humiliating him by yelling at him in front of his wife.

Bell, now associate dean of the liberal arts college, and Moehring, who has taught at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for 28 years, declined comment on the lawsuit.

No need to be sorry, we all make mistakes. And here I am laughing myself off over this news. Jeez louise, how about being thankful for getting a B...especially in college. Better than a C, no?

Exactly, I think the guy should be happy he received a B. A B is definitely better than a C.

Getting a B- is NOT that bad. And since when do student loans have to do with your GPA? His GPA must have sucked to begin with if getting a B- made it THAT bad. Some people .

If you can't keep up with the lecture, then you have no place being there. Besides, buying a tape recorder isn't that hard. You could also learn shorthand, or abbreviate words. My notes make no sense to anyone but me after lectures.

I changed the title of this thread. I can't believe that someone would sue a University for receiving a B-. This country is way too ligitation happy.

Hm, I got a B+ in one of my classes last semester--I think I shall sue the teacher now. It was weird, because the only person in the class who got an A was the only african american student in the class....

It happens, I know it does cause it happens to some people here in Manitoba. They ask if you have satisfactory grades and if you say no, then you have to submit a letter of grades and why you didn't do well. I'll have to do it in the fall when I apply for SL then.

Interesting. Most student loans here in the United States are based on your credit. I've never had a loan that asked for grades because you have to repay it regardless of what grades you get.
