Man Stabbed Two Children To Death, Then Slit His Own Throat

(02/24/05 - Columbus, GA) — A father fatally stabbed his two young children and seriously wounded three others with a hunting knife before committing suicide by slitting his throat, police said.

The father, Clarence Lacey Moore, 24, and the five children were found in a home in south Columbus after Wednesday's attack, police said.

Clarence Smith Moore, 1, died on the floor by his bed, county coroner James Dunnavant saidtold the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer. Two-year-old Stephan Smith Moore died in a hospital.

The other three children underwent surgery at The Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Marion Scott said. The two boys -- 3-year-old Shawn Smith and 5-year-old Shelton Smith -- remained in critical condition Thursday, she said. The condition of their older sister, Shelby Smith, 7, was upgraded Thursday to satisfactory.

Beverly Moore, the mother of all five children, was not injured, said police Maj. Russell Traino.

A witness, Cressa Matthews, she said Beverly Moore was screaming and collapsed across the street from the house. When police arrived at the house, Matthews said, a bleeding little girl came out into the front yard.

"She was all bloody and cut up," Matthews said. The mother, she said, "kept asking, 'Did you get all five of my babies?' "

Columbus is in western Georgia on the Alabama state line.
