Man stabbed during Awards Show

Found this on MTV.com

Dr. Dre Attacked, Man Stabbed During Melee At Vibe Awards

The second annual Vibe Awards turned ugly Monday night after Dr. Dre was attacked, the G-Unit got involved in a brawl, and a man was stabbed.

According to eyewitness accounts, about three-quarters of the way into the program Snoop Dogg and Quincy Jones were onstage getting ready to present Dr. Dre with the Vibe Legend Award when the legendary production impresario was attacked near the stage. Witnesses said Dre was standing next to his wife when a man approached as if seeking an autograph and then all of a sudden began throwing punches at the hip-hop pioneer's head, landing a couple of blows. As Dre started to defend himself by swinging back, bodyguards and people with the G-Unit jumped in to protect Dre and things quickly got out of control.

MTV has obtained footage of some of the brawl, and it shows Quincy Jones and Snoop onstage while the fighting ensues. Jones is on the mic telling people that they "messed up my rap" and later vents in disgust, "I can't believe this." On the floor — although they are not seen throwing punches — 50 Cent and Lloyd Banks are in the middle of the fray. Several men who appear to be with them have their attention directed toward two other men. One of the men was extremely husky and was holding the considerably smaller man in his arms to protect him. The smaller man was visibly frightened and holding onto the leg of a police officer who was standing onstage. Meanwhile, the men who appeared to be with the G-Unit were throwing chairs and punches, and police sprayed mace into the whirlwind of people. The fight spilled behind a black curtain to the backstage area of the awards show, which was held in the Barker Hangar at Santa Monica Municipal Airport.

Santa Monica police said one man — whom they identified only as being a 26-year-old from Los Angeles — was stabbed during the incident. He was taken to a hospital and is listed in stable condition. The only description they give of the suspect was that he was a black male wearing a white T-shirt.

After the situation calmed down — between 10 and 25 minutes later — the ceremony continued. Dr. Dre picked up his award and told the crowd he wouldn't let incidents like that one slow him down. Later, the audience was treated to a performance of "Drop It Like It's Hot" by Snoop with Pharrell Williams. Jadakiss also performed and was joined by Anthony Hamilton and Common.

Vibe President Kenard Gibbs released a statement on Tuesday saying, "We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred last night. It is unfortunate that an event so many people worked very hard to create has been tainted by the actions of a few individuals. The Vibe Awards and Vibe magazine represent the best of urban culture and they will continue to do so. It is a testament to the true vision of the Vibe Awards that the magnificent talent and staff continued on to create a fantastic show."

A spokesperson for the G-Unit and Dr. Dre had no comment.

The Vibe Awards are scheduled to air Tuesday at 8 p.m. on UPN.

This is like the second time something like this has happened. I remember a couple years ago when there was a shooting during the Source Awards.

Well, they're batting 50/50 right now. The odds don't seem too good. Although I agree, it sucks that such a celebration would be tainted by such actions.

Funny that it happened right before they were going to give an award to Dr. Dre...that kind of music glorifies violence. No wonder it happened.

It glorifies it "so much" that it is now mainstream WHITE SUBURBAN mantra.

White kids want to be Black now.

They want to be "gangstas", but without the real bullets, poverty and hardships that real Blacks go through on a daily basis.

It's pathetic.

Also, if you weren't so quick to make such an ignorant and biased statement...

You'd know that Dr. Dre now produces (and acts) as do a lot of other hardcore "street rappers" (Ice T; Ice Cube; LL Cool J; Snoop Dog; etc.) and they preach AGAINST violence and the whole point of the Vibe awards is to show African American youth there is another way to "come up from the hood" without resorting to the gun, or the crack pipe (selling/using).

But of course, all rap music is "bad"...

Unless it's done by some White guy like Eminem (Marshal Mathers), right?

Hee.

UnsilentMajorty, I think you need to take a deep breath and relax. No one was singling blacks out as being the only ones at fault for violence.

Also, given lyrics like, Nigga bow down to the row
****in me, now I'm ****in you, little hoe
Oh, don't think I forgot, let you slide
Let me ride, just another homicide
, I wouldn't go as far as to say all of his songs are pure.

And while they are delivering youth from violence, shouldn't "street rappers'' that are preaching to young, impressionable African Americans be able to "come up from the hood" without referring to their girlfriends as "bitches", "hoes" and "sluts"? Or is disrespect towards women acceptable as a credible "street rapper"?

I just wanted to add that.

I wouldn't say that it happened because the music is violent; I'd say the music is violent because it's a reflection of the culture they've experienced.

I don't think he wants to get back into the rap game...last time he tried that Suge Knight and his people hung him by his ankles over a hotel balcolney.
