Man Dies After Playing Computer Games for 49 Hours

The strange and shocking way to die, I couldn't even put it up on one of those threads

Man Dies After Playing Computer Games For 49 Hours

POSTED: 6:36 am CDT August 10, 2005

SEOUL, South Korea -- For some people, playing video games can be addictive, and police in South Korea said that may have cost a man his life.

Police said a 28-year-old man collapsed at an Internet cafe and died after playing the battle simulation game Starcraft non-stop for 49 hours. They said he'd barely eaten anything while he was glued to the keyboard.

Doctors think the man might have had a heart attack.

Police said he was fired from his job last month because he kept missing work to play computer games.

Without a doubt, he had an addictive personality or some type of psychological disorder, perhaps something that caused him to believe video games were reality as opposed to living in the real world. That would suck though. I play games a lot but I can barely play for an hour straight without getting up and getting something to eat or taking a break. I just get bored really easily. I think my record it like 5 hours playing a game but it was the first day I got it and I didn't have school the next day.
I'm surprised the internet cafe was open 24/7 or that the manager didn't call someone about him. Most cafes close about midnight or 2am.

I know I've played games all day before, not for multiple days without any sleep, that's a little extreme.

Serious though, Starcraft? It's a good game, but you can't play a single game of Starcraft for 50 hours. It's based on maps, and clearing even the biggest multiplayer map takes a lot less than 50 hours. That means he played many shorter games, and there would have been plenty of opportunities to take breaks.

It's not like a game with a continuous storyline where it's possible to play straight through for days, like reading a book you couldn't put down.

I think there are some cafes that open 24/7. Mostly in countries like Japan, Singapore, Russia...there's one in Atlanta. Or at least according to Google.

Ah, thank you. My only experience with internet Cafes has been in London, Paris, and Dublin and many of those seem to open around 11:00am, sometimes noon, and then close at 2:00am. But then, I didn't have much time to spend at internet cafes when I was in Europe either time so I don't know other hours. I am surprised that the manager or some worker didn't say something to him. But then, he was paying money so I'm sure they were happy about that.

Wow I didn't know you could die playing games for so long

Maybe he was at some sort of LAN-party? If they organise those parties here people just play for 3 days and nights without sleeping

This is actually an old story, I believe. This actually happened last year believe it or not... Or there was a similar one in Japan.

Video games is looked at in Asian and some European cultures much differently than here in the U.S. It is considered a legitimate sport (not just "kids" stuff) and parents will often let their children skip school in order to practice for various tournaments because of the money they can win.

Obviously, the guy had problems, but the legal question that should be asked is should the internet cafe be held partly responsible since they may have not done anything to help the guy stop playing?

No, the cafe shouldn't be held responsible. He was an adult, capable of taking care of himself. And if it is as you say, with games being much more important there than in the US then it is understandable that they didn't make him stop.

You know, i'm not surprised...especially that it happened in Korea. I grew up there, i know how serious game playing is. Its crazy. I have friends who disappear for months playing World of Warcraft...but they always make time to eat.

This makes me sad cause I can totally see myself going out like this. Like when I was playing Final Fantasy 7 for two days without sleep. I did eat though.

Wow, that's strange. He must have been obsessive compulsive or something. Sad.
