Man Arrested In Pen Stabbing At Comic-Con

SAN DIEGO -- A young man who stabbed another near the eye with a pen Saturday at the Comic-Con convention at the San Diego Convention Center was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, police said.

The stabbing occurred around 4:45 p.m. at the convention center at 111 W. Harbor Drive, a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department dispatcher said.

The men were in Hall H at Comic-Con when they argued over one sitting too close to the other in the crowded room, said San Diego police Officer David Stafford.

"The males got into a physical altercation and one male struck the other male near the eye with a pen," he said.

"The male that was struck was taken to a local hospital with a minor cut on or near his eyelid."

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, Stafford said.

The men were in their early 20s and the pen stabbing occurred between panels for "Resident Evil: Afterlife" and two upcoming films from Universal Studios, "Paul" and "Cowboys and Aliens," which was delayed for 45 minutes because of the incident, the Union-Tribune reported on its website.

Other attendees restrained the suspect until police arrived, the newspaper reported.
Comic-Con is San Diego's largest annual convention.

Stafford described the Comic-Con crowd of self-described freaks and geeks as usually tame.

"There really haven't been any issues," he said. "They don't drink, so that cuts down on the fights."

What a dumb thing to do. I hope it was worth going to jail over.

Tragic. But this sentence had me laugh "The males got into a physical altercation and one male struck the other male near the eye with a pen,"

Could he even have found a more... technical way of putting it?

Man, I know nerds can get all riled up. I mean, there was almost a war about which set of Star Wars trilogies is the best, but still, this is a little much.

Are there seriously people arguing that episodes 1-3 are better than 4-6? Because I'm a die-hard Star Wars fan, and even I can point out the logistical flaws in the latter trilogy, even though I will defend its merits should any neophite have something to say against it.

I have to say that, to me, someone stabbing anyone in the eye (or by the eye or whatever) with anything, even a pen, isn't all that funny. I don't think you can blame the nerd factor either or there would be far more stabbings at Comic-Con and Fantasia (a Montreal international film festival that's pretty genre-heavy).

Anyway, I'm a nerd and it would never occur to me to stab someone over... well, pretty much anything (save perhaps in self-defense).
