GENEVA — An Elburn man was charged this week with having sex with a dog. The Kane County state's attorney's office Thursday said Daniel J. Joyner, 27, was charged with two counts of engaging in sexual conduct with an animal, and one count of criminal damage to property. All three counts are felonies, the state's attorney's office said. The charges were issued Wednesday and announced Thursday. The offense happened in Geneva, which means the Geneva Police Department is investigating the incident. As of Thursday afternoon, Joyner still was at large, the state's attorney's office said. According to a news release, Joyner was charged with one count of placing a bottle in the anus of a female pitbull/boxer mix for sexual arousal, and a second count of placing his penis in the dog's anus for sexual arousal. The third count of criminal damage to property came about because the state's attorney's office said Joyner injured the animal when he placed the bottle in the dog's anus. Assistant State's Attorney Debra Bree, special prosecutor in the Animal Crimes Task Force, said as of Thursday afternoon, the injured dog is recovering. "The dog is doing OK," she said. She declined further comment on details of the incident, except to say the owner of the dog pressed charges against Joyner. "I can tell you this was reported by the owner of the dog," she said. The warrant issued for Joyner's arrest carries a bail of $50,000. Anyone with information regarding Joyner's whereabouts is asked to call the Detective's Division at the Geneva Police Department. If convicted, Joyner could be sentenced to from one to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections and fined up to $25,000 for each charge. Probation is a possibility as well. Bree said her office usually prosecutes animal-cruelty cases. But the crime of sexual conduct with an animal is from a different part of the state statutes, she said. "I have not seen a case like this before," she said.
