Major Earthquake hits Peru

Large quake jolts Peru; tsunami warning issued
7.5-magnitude temblor reportedly causes power outages, shakes Lima

LIMA, Peru - A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake shook the central coast of Peru Wednesday evening, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for Peru, Chile, Ecuador and Colombia.

The earthquake struck about 90 miles southeast of the capital of Lima, according to the Web site of the USGS.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

An Associated Press photographer reported some homes had collapsed in the center of the city and that many people had fled into the streets for safety. Another AP reporter said the quake shook the city for more than a minute.

Callers to Radio Programas, Peru's main news station, said parts of several cities in southern Peru had been hit with blackouts.

Holy crap, I used to live in that area and I still family there.

I live in Hawaii and the advisory was just cancelled so we're fine. We're having more problems with an out of control brush fire than hurricanes or tsunamis.

However that earthquake looks like it did some damge. I hope the death toll doesn't go very high.

My sister's boyfriend and his family are all from Lima and the surrounding area. The boyfriend's actually at our house right now, but needless to say, it's going to be tense until he's able to contact his family.

They keep showing the statistics from the 1970 earthquake and drawing comparisons between the two since they were fairly similar in size but... I don't know. It seems like it's going to cause more panic than anything, since a huge part of the reason that one was so deadly (death toll reports tend to fall somewhere between 45K and 66K) is because it basically made the side of a mountain collapse and an avalanche buried two towns, and three more were totally destroyed. It doesn't appear that anything like that happened here, which is obviously a good sign.

So horrible how many people died and were left homeless. Anyone know of any legitimate programs I could donate money to?
