Little Girl Has 25 Middle Names

I can't imagine having that many middle names. One is enough for me.

Quote:
London (AFP) - Baby Autumn Brown has a name to live up - in fact she has over 25 of them.

The little girl's mother Maria, in keeping with her boxing-mad family's bizarre tradition, decided to give her 25 middle names - all culled from the greatest exponents inside the ring.

Her full name, which left register office staff in Perton, Wolverhampton reeling is: Autumn Sullivan Corbett Fitzsimmons Jeffries Hart Burns Johnson Willard Dempsey Tunney Schmeling Sharkey Carnera Baer Braddock Louis Charles Walcott Marciano Patterson Johansson Liston Clay Frazier Foreman Brown.

Maria told the city's Express and Star: "The whole thing came about because both my mum and dad are obsessed with boxing and have a bit of a daft sense of humour.

"When I was young I couldn't ever remember my name. It took me to the age of 10 to memorise it all."

The 33-year-old mother added: "I'm hoping Autumn has a good sense of humour with her name. It's never done me any harm though."

If only at least one were a female name and not just a bunch of surnames or male names.

I'd call her Sharkey.

If I were that kid, once I turn eighteen, I would change my names. And I would never tell anyone I have that many middle names.

Those are old boxing names! I recognize most of them because I'm a boxing history buff! That poor kid!

Her mother is right: she'll NEED a sense of humor growing up...

...or maybe Boxing Lessons!

So... when she has to fill something out asking for her middle name or middle initial, what would she put?

I don't know, colour me insane, but I don't see how it's that big of a deal. Obviously, it's tremendously excessive, but I grew up with plenty of people whose names were downright weird. This is a bit wacky, but there's nothing downright bizarre about it.

I mean, how many AMC fans have I heard reciting Erica Kane's full name? Or Elizabeth Taylor's, come to that?

Or maybe it's because I've got quite a few middle names myself (seven, and all of them bona fide girls' names), but I really don't see the big deal.

There's a commission in Canada with the sole job to tell parents they can't name their kids whatever it is they were planning on naming them. I had a friend who did a research paper on that commission back in university. Among the names refused were Spatula, Cowboy, Satan and Hysterectomy. Now, that's where I'd be going "that poor kid."

And didn't I read on CNN.com something about parents in Australia wanting to name their child "4real" but currently awaiting a judge's decision as to whether numerals can be accepted as part of a proper name?

If I were her, I'd just pick the first one. Personally, it's hard for me sometimes to fill out papers because I have two middle names and there's only room for one.

I don't get why her family decided to legally register all those names though - I know several people with maybe 4 names but only 2 are legally registered. I personally kinda wish my first name wasn't registered cause I never use it/don't actually like it much and it just makes my life difficult

Also, I don't know, it doesn't seem they're actually thinking of the kid. It's more using her naming for their own boxing obsession thing. Can't you enjoy boxing without inflicting that on the kid?

I agree. It is a bit much to give such a tiny baby all those names. Even if they wanted to give them all to her, they didn't have to make it legally binding.

Oh, she doesn't seem too mussed by it, from what I can tell by that article.

And, weird though it may be in this instance, wouldn't you rather be named after something your parents loved?

The legal thing is a bit odd. I may have my seven middle names, but only... I think two or three... are legally registered. It's just that, prior to my birth, my parents were tossing a lot of name possibilities around (I'm the eldest, so I guess the whole "we're having a baby" excitement kicked their imaginations into overtime) and whatever I'm not named is what my middle names are. So it's always been the seven of them, even if it's not legally.

Filling out paperwork, I assume she (like Ashley and myself) picks just the one for want of space. My mum and dad had the same thing. They're from that generation where every boy was baptized with his godfather's name, Joseph and then his name; and every girl was baptized with her godmother's name, Marie and then her name. So they've got the multiple middle names as well.

Come to think of it, not that it's any kind of issue really, but that makes me feel a little bit bad for my younger brother. He's only got the one middle name.

Well, she's a baby - she doesn't have an opinion yet

I understand naming your child after something you love, but this just seems excessive to me. Like the celebrities who give their kids ridiculous names (like Moon Unit!) cause they think it's cool. Or they think their baby is their new toy and don't realize their kid is going to have to live with that name forever. I mean, I don't want to give my future-babies incredibly common names - I'd like them to be a little unique. But I'm not going to make anything up or give them something totally outrageous.

Oh, I'm right there with you with the ordinary names versus celebrity insanity. But then her name's gonna be Autumn, not the 25 others.

And it is incredibly excessive. But, considering that's her parents, she'll probably grow up to understand it, too.

And I totally spazzed on who was talking. I thought, for some weird reason, that they were talking to her and not, as it turns out, her mother. Oh, well.

Seriously, if this girl turns out to resent her name, we should all be very careful what happens to the Apple Martins, Puma Badu Currys, Kal-el Cages, FIfi Trixibelle Geldofs, Alcamy Henriksens, Free Carradines, Moxie CrimeFighter Jillettes and Audio Science Claytons of this world.
