'80s teen flick director John Hughes dies in NYC

NEW YORK – A spokeswoman for John Hughes says the director of 1980s coming-of-age films like "Sixteen Candles" and "The Breakfast Club" has died in Manhattan.

Michelle Bega says the 59-year-old Hughes died of a heart attack during a morning walk. He was in Manhattan to visit family.

He made a teen star of Molly Ringwald with 1984's "Sixteen Candles" about a girl's nightmarish birthday on the eve of her sister's wedding.

Ringwald also starred in "The Breakfast Club," about a group of high school misfits during Saturday detention, and "Pretty in Pink."

Hughes also directed "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and wrote "Home Alone." He lived in Illinois and set many of his films in the Chicago area.
What the hell is going on this summer? Everyone is dying left and right!

I know! What is going on?! And at such a young age too. Poor thing.

Oh, my God! This man's films were such an important part of my formative years... I'm shocked.

My thoughts go out to his family and loved ones who must be numb with the pain and grief of it all right now.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off has to be my most favorite movie from him. I could watch it endlessly and never get tired of it.

I can't put into words what Breakfast Club meant to me.

Whatever it was that I was in high school, somewhere at the crossroads between basket case and total nerd, that movie spoke to me in ways no movie had before.

It was the first time I saw movie teenagers acting more or less like real teenagers. Like real people, fully formed and everything.

And, I don't know, it gave me vicarious thrills.

Not to mention that John Hughes inspired Kevin Smith to make movies. Which, you know, for that alone...

I am still so sad about this. His movies were so much a part of my life. Priceless classics. That's about the only way to put it.
