Iranian leader bans usage of foreign words

Quote:
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has ordered government and cultural bodies to use modified Persian words to replace foreign words that have crept into the language, such as "pizzas" which will now be known as "elastic loaves," state media reported Saturday.

The presidential decree, issued earlier this week, orders all governmental agencies, newspapers and publications to use words deemed more appropriate by the official language watchdog, the Farhangestan Zaban e Farsi, or Persian Academy, the Irna official news agency reported.

The academy has introduced more than 2,000 words as alternatives for some of the foreign words that have become commonly used in Iran, mostly from Western languages. The government is less sensitive about Arabic words, because the Quran is written in Arabic.

Among other changes, a "chat" will become a "short talk" and a "cabin" will be renamed a "small room," according to official Web site of the academy.

Is this guy teetering on the edge here? Seriously, how exactly does he think the word pizza is going to corrupt Iran?

Man, talk about micromanaging a country, decreeing that "foreign" words should be changed. Hey, pass those Freedom Fries!

I think changing the name of a menu item in your own cafeteria is a little different from legislating how language is to be used in the news media.

If you want a Western example of this idiocy, look at Quebec. No Quebec premier, however, has ever vowed to exterminate an ethnic group, so the comparison will have to be limited to stupid language laws.

LOL, Jerry. Language is a powerful tool but you'd think people had better things to do then rename french toast or pizza.

Yeah, we might have ridiculous battles over apostrophes here, but at least we don't go around preaching genocide. It's not quite the same thing.

I read that Chirac once stormed out of a meeting because the speaker addressed the crowd in English rather than French because he said English was the language of business.

I think Iran (or any other nation in the world) has more pressing problems than language. What has gotten into this guy's mind?

Yeah, I remember reading about them doing that. But as you say, it isn't like their government forces them to comply.
