Important Moments in History #2 ~ On this September 11, 2011

As I was saying...

I've been watching all the specials so, today, for a bit of a change of pace, I watched the memorial ceremonies in Gander, N.L.

It was just really uplifting to see how, in an hour of such tragedy, people were reminded of the capacity for human kindness by those who hosted them after hundreds and hundreds of planes were asked to land in such a short amount of time, leaving tens of thousands stranded... they didn't even know where.

I was a freshman in high school when they hit. We turned on the TV just in time to see the second plane hit the second tower, and watched both towers fall. I don't watch any of the specials or documentaries. I saw it all in real life. I don't really need to see it again.
It has had a stronger impact on me this year though. I guess having a girlfriend in the military who is fighting for a cause directly related to this event does make it a little more personal.

I was starting my first semester of Journalism school, so it's all we talked about at university.

And, then, of course, my cousin's a Long Island firefighter and we couldn't get a hold of him for the longest time.

So the specials are actually interesting for me. Because I couldn't compute it at the time. I couldn't computer for a long time. It was all a gaping hole.

Now, time means I know how it ends. And even though it's not a good ending, there's no anxiety anymore.

I don't know how to respond to something like that.

It is shocking, of course. You can't say it's normal that human beings did that to other human beings...

But, at the same time, not that is makes it less horrible, but it does happen all around the world.

So, yeah, I don't know how to respond.

In terms of global thinking its not shocking. But just considering the fact that these kinds of things hardly ever happen on us soil makes it surprising. I think that it has made a psychological impact on America as a whole.

Oh, no doubt, it's made an impact on the American psyche. You just have to listen to the venom in political rhetoric dealing with either foreign diplomacy or anything falling under the notion of The Other to see the change it's made.

And, yet, I grew up ten minutes from the border. I've spent a lot of time in the U.S. (more so than in Canada, which is odd). And I've only ever met one American I would qualify as a narrow-minded douche-canoe.
