These things are just so scary, and I really wish that they'd never happen. I feel bad for people that have to deal with this over and over.

All I can say is, if you're anywhere near the coast where the eye is going to land or to the right of it GET OUT!

We went through Katrina and ended up evacuating for the first time in advance of Gustav because I never, ever EVER want to go through something like that again. If you are far enough inland to escape the surge, you will still endure weeks of NO power (Texas, like Mississippi, in Sept is no nice, comfortable place without a/c or fans-----think being in the pits of hell with no relief), no stores where you can just drive and get whatever you need, but you know, you won't even be able to get there if they DID have anything to buy, because you won't have any GAS.

Here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, hundreds of miles from the storm, we've had some horrible weather the past couple of days. Imagine what you're going to go through if you're in FRONT of it!

And to anyone who thinks I'm being overdramatic, well, it's all true and if it helps just one person get out of harm's way, then I'm glad I posted.

I'm sorry, but anyone that doesn't evacuate from the areas in Texas that have been required to do so and have the means to do so, if something happens to them, well, it's pretty much their fault and I have no sympathy for them what so ever.

It sure is coming....wind has picked up big time and it just began to rain in my area. And I don't even live close to the gulf coast area. Hoping for the best here.

I hope those who were told to evacuate have done so. Wow, I'm hoping Texas won't be effected too badly either.

Actually, something like 20,000 of the Gavelstone residents, who were ALL told to evacuate, did not. I don't know any of them personally, so I'm not about to judge the whys and wherefores of their reasons for staying... but not everyone got out.

Fortunately, the death toll seems to have stayed relatively low so far. Can't say the same for Cuba and, especially, Haiti (which just weathered three hurricanes on top of each other, and which wasn't particularly doing all that great to begin with).

All the same, the damages are said to have been conservatively estimated at upwards of $8 billion (in the States, I'm not sure if the entire real estate of Cuba and Haiti combined would amount to that).

After evacuating three times in three years I will say evacuating is almost as bad as staying for the hurricane. During Rita it took us 13 hours to make a 2 hour trip. We stayed this time because we do not live in a flood area. Our home was not damaged but I have friends and family who were not as lucky. I left my home yesterday because we do not have lights or water but they will be on soon. Ike was scary but IMO Rita was worse for my area and Texas rebuilds fast.

Well, this is gonna sound like sheer idiotic whining, but we caught the tail-end of Ike up here in Quebec today. Unusual amounts of precipitations in some areas, but mostly gale winds. The power was knocked out in areas all over the province for portions of the day, some areas are still getting it back as we speak but are expected to get it back very soon.

And, in Montreal, ambient moisture levels were so high that the condensation in the metro system ground the system to a halt this morning. Which, considering hundreds of thousands of people in this city rely on the metro for transportation, was rather annoying.

Like I said, in comparison, it's just whining. It is a testament to how strong these things are, though, if you consider how far their impact is felt even after they've hit land.

Sunny, I'm glad that it wasn't anything too serious. I wish the same could be said for the victims in Texas. I hear 2 million are still without electricity. Plus, gas has gone up almost 2 more dollars than what is was before the storm. I hope those price gougers are found and dealt with swiftly.

Hey,
I just popped over to the Mod board and Chris, one of the Mod Managers, said he's been heard from but his electricity could be out for some time so it may be awhile. Jerry D is OK though, and he should be back around soon. Still, keep him and everyone else from the area in your thoughts. This is a tough time for everyone.
