The impression that I get from this administration, and this is not an impression that I've garnered from any sort of close contact with any of its members, is that it's not necessarily one that fosters even constructive criticism, let alone real criticism.

I've read Maureen Dowd's book, Bushworld, which is only one woman's opinion of people and administrations. But, in any event, from it, I gather that Bush was a bit of a pitbull during his father's administration, inasmuch as he sniffed out and "addressed" rather aggressively any suspected dissention within the ranks.

Now, Dowd may be completely off the mark, and I may be completely off the mark myself, but I really don't think that this administration welcomes any kind of thinking, acting or even mentionning of any positions counter to the official one.

From the way those thirteen attorneys were fired for refusing to do their jobs according to the party line, I also infer that Bush Jr. does not allow for differences of opinions within his own ranks. And he's already said (though I'm not entirely sure when and where) that he doesn't read newspapers and news magazines, but rather waits for his advisers to tell him what's going on out there in the world...

So, all of that leads me to believe that this president may very well never hear even the smallest bit of actual criticism.

I agree with deflecting the question. But also instead of the democratic nominee saying something negative, and perhaps creating so reall bad press, roll out the Speaker.
Yeah, I'm kinda surprised she was bold enough to come out and say it too. I think this is the first time Pelosi has even said something negative against the president since taking office. But ever since making the comment, nobody has come after her about it - not even the media. Maybe she's saying what has been on most people's minds for years.

Then he must be living under a rock if he thinks that he's brought much success to this country during his two terms.

People are saying Bush's politics killed more people than Osama bin Laden did. Honestly, I believe him. Hopefully someone smart will be the next president, I have no faith at all in current US politics.

Well, if you're looking strictly at the number of casualties, he has.

To be fair, though, death is a part of war. And it's not like he put them all on a boat and then sunk that boat.

I don't think the war in Iraq was justified. And I don't think it's been managed well at all. I do think Bush is responsible for his troops and their deaths.

However, you can't ascribe to him the same amount of cold malice that was omnipresent in the attacks of 9/11.

The US uses 9/11 to jstify everything. I don't like that. I think he got more people killed by carelessness and mismanagement in a war that he knew he couldn't afford - and I believe he should have known beforehand and that is almost just as bad.

New poster here. I couldn't agree more with Mrs. Pelosi. She should have said this a long long time ago. Bush has been an epic failure. He's failed miserably at everything and America and the world will be better off when he's not the president anymore.

Fez First of alll, hi! And welcome.

I think it's important to distinguish between the country of the United States and its leader or even its current Administration. The fact that George W. Bush and his administration have whittled away at the democratic process in the States and have consistantly attacked civil liberties of American citizens and foreigners alike should not lead anyone to believe that the American people bandy about their worst tragedy in recent memory in the same manner that their leaders sometimes do.

Having said that, I believe that still-President Bush (love how Jon Stewart keeps refering to him as that) operates in a completely different world than the one in which the rest of us live in. I've no idea as to whether or not he realizes how wrong everything is going, but I am fairly convinced that he believes he has active on a spiritual or moral imperative, making it really hard for him to comprehend that his actions are utterly wrong. Banking, as he does, on history to prove him right only shows to me that he really holds himself to be above the rest of us, as though we can't just for ourselves the truth of the reality we all live in.

Mind you, that's just my opinion. I've never met the man and I'm not an expert, so who knows.

obamaalltheway Hi! And welcome.

Because of course she's been just great herself, right? Last I heard, her democrat-led congress was even less popular than Bush.

Bush has sucked big time. Now I think that Pelosi shouldn't have said this mainly because she comes off as a hypocrite. I mean Bush has failed many times but Pelosi shouldn't have said it. If she and Congress had a better approval rating and had actually done something, then I would agree with her. But now when I think about it, I think she probably should have kept it to herself.

Well, it's not like she's wrong.

It's that she's a big hypocrite.

That's a matter of opinion.

Btw, approval ratings (last I heard) for the Pelosi-headed democrat-dominated congress: 9% What a roaring success.

Hence, "she's a big hypocrite."

Yikes that is a low approval rating, she should watch what she is saying. Or maybe the Republicans will start coming after her, and from what I have seen she has no leg to stand on in regards to her work as speaker.

She may have no leg to stand on, but I think the Republicans are all too busy trying to distrance themselves from the current administration to bother coming down on her.

Oh I sure they may not do anything, but at some time they may pull out all the stops. Come on this is American politics.
