High School Bans 'Juicy' Skirt

POSTED: 12:47 pm EDT September 8, 2004

BECKLEY, W.Va. -- Nichoel Hawks' "Juicy" skirt was a little too much for school officials in Raleigh County, W.Va.

It wasn't too short, but too suggestive, officials said.

The 10th-grader was forced to spend a day in the principal's office after she wore the skirt to class.

The skirt had the slogan "It's all about Juicy" along the backside.

School district officials said it could lead to sexually harassing comments from other students.

Nichoel's mother, Jennifer Hawks, noted Juicy is a brand name of an expensive line of clothing.

She said officials didn't know about the brand and made a mistake by banning her daughter's skirt.

I have to kind of agree with the school on this one. Nothing bugs me more than to see kids, usually pre-teens, wearing this Juicy line. Even the sweatpants with the juicy across the butt. Little kids do not need to be wearing that and parents should not buy it for them!

As well that girl's skirt saying "it is all about the juicy" along the backside - just makes me wonder. I wonder more about the company really and its marketing tactics.

I agree with the school as well. These kind of outfits do just lead to trouble. At times I want to grab thse girls and tell them to change. I mean when I was in high school, 4yrs ago. We wore outfits like that we were called tarts.

I think the thing that disgust me the most about the situation is the fact that the mother 'noted' that it is 'expensive'. Oh please!

I agree it sounds disgusting to wear that and while ppl can wear whatever they want, you wonder why you would allow your child out in something like that.

Schools really should adopt stricter dress codes. And the parents are as much to blame for letting their kids wear that to school.

I too agree with the school. I am disgusted in the choice of clothing young kid wear today- more disgusted with the parents for letting them wear it. I know sometimes they have no control, but ahem, you are the parent?

My mom went shopping with me when I wanted clothes and made sure that it was appropreate because school was about learning, it's not one big fashion show.

Things like this make me wish more schools had uniforms. I honestly wanted uniforms in HS, and with how suggestive and...minimal fashion is getting these days I think more places should really consider it.

I've never heard of Juicy. Is it really that expensive? Sounds like something you'd get at Kmart.

I don't agree with the school. It IS just a brand. I think it's incredibly tacky to walk around with that on your ass, and Juicy makes ugly clothes anyway, IMO, but I think most people (at my school, at least) would know what it was referring to. And hey, it's her problem if she starts getting harassed. If she cared she wouldn't be wearing it in the first place. And since she's in 10th grade, she's probably about 16 years old...not a little kid.

I agree. I went to a private school where uniforms were mandatory but I didn't mind. It took the focus off having to have the newest brands and saved my parents some money. Public schools around here are starting to adopt uniforms or stricter dress codes which I think is a good idea.

I disagree with the school on this one. Maybe I just don't understand how they could possibly interpret the word "juicy" as suggestive. Regardless of that reason, my biggest concern is not what the skirt means (or what they think it means) rather I have issues with the school officials saying that it could lead to sexually harassing comments from other students. It seems to me that they are putting the concievable weight of other peoples comments on her back(side). If her skirt causes people to make lewd comments, the school shouldn't be looking at her skirt as the problem, they should be looking at the harassing students as the problem.

secret boyfriend, juicy is suggestive as people would read it across her arse, which is right next to something else, which could get "juicy". The term is sexually suggestive and the school has to prevent her from her own stupidity.

Sexual harassment lawsuits are very dangerous...it's better for the school to just nip this in the bud then try and deal with it later.

Just from the comment the mother made I can just imagine - somebody makes sexual comments to the girl, she complains, the mom sues the school because they didn't proect her...I wouldn't put it past people.

Anyways the school needs to create an environment that isn't distractive. Obviously a girl walking around with pants that say "JUICY" on the ass is going to distract some kids.

The school's job is to create an environment where students can study and develop as individuals. If they're creating the kind of students who would sexually harass someone for wearing a brand-name, then something needs to change (hint: it's not the brand-name that needs to change).

No one is taking to account that as a 15/16 year old, this girl probably knew exactly what people might say if she had "Juicy" written over her bottom. She was probably counting on it, too.
