NEW YORK (AP) - January 22, 2008 -- Actor Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday at a downtown Manhattan residence in what authorities say is a possible drug-related death, the NYPD said. He was 28.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne told The Associated Press that Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the Manhattan apartment that is believed to be his home. The housekeeper who went to let Ledger know the masseuse was there, and found him dead at 3:26 p.m, Browne said.

The Australian-born actor was nominated for an Oscar for "Brokeback Mountain," where he met his wife, actress Michelle Williams, in 2005. Ledger and Williams had lived in Brooklyn and had a daughter, Matilda, until they split up last year.
Ledger's roles include the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton in "Monster's Ball" and had starring roles in "A Knight's Tale" and "The Patriot." He was to appear as the Joker this year in "The Dark Night," a sequel to 2005's "Batman Begins."

I seriously don't know what to say.

It's very sad news, especially after hearing that he has a daughter. I know it'll be very hard to watch if I end up seeing the Dark Knight.

Heath Ledger was found dead in his Manhattan apartment.

The Academy Award nominated actor was 28.

"Pills were found in the vicinity of the bed," police spokesman Paul Browne told CNN.

"This is being looked at as a possible overdose, but that is not confirmed yet."

Police later said the pills "appear to be over the counter" sleeping medication.

Ledger was unresponsive when he was found by a housekeeper who had gone to wake him for an appointment with a masseuse in the Soho apartment, Browne said.

He was declared dead at about 3:30 p.m., Browne said.

In 2005, the actor played Ennis Del Mar in "Brokeback Mountain," about two cowboys who had a secret relationship.

The role earned him the Oscar nomination.

Ledger was born in Perth, Australia. He has a young daughter with actress Michelle Williams, his co-star in "Brokeback Mountain."

"He was just so respected in the industry," said Kim Serafin, senior editor of In Touch Weekly. "It's just horribly tragic. He was just a fine actor and a good person, so this is horribly sad and very unexpected."

I saw that when I pulled up AOL and I thought it had to be some horrible joke. It's so sad, he was a great talent, one of the better actors of his generation.

I heard about this on an another message board I visit. I'm in complete and utter shock. I loved him as an actor. He was so talented.

My thoughts are with his family, Michelle and their little girl.

I don't know if I'll be able to sit through The Dark Knight now, I was really looking forward to seeing him in it

Rip: Heath. A great actor, had such a bright carreer ahead of him.

I really wish tmz would back off for once. They have a freaking live feed up. Come on, this isn't brit/kfed shenanigans. And I can't believe they bothered Lindsey Lohan like that. What is wrong with them!?

I'm hoping this was just an accident due to him wanting to get some sleep. =(

i cant believe he is dead my mom went on the computer and she said that he had died i feel so bad for matilida i know it is going to be hard on her and his family he made some great movies

I heard about this from my friend and watched on the news. Admittedly, I wasnt a huge fan, but he was an aussie, like me, so I have to have some compassion as well. I get sad when actors I know of die, but Heath being so young is more of a shock. I feel bad for little Matilda and Michelle as well.
