Happy Birthday to Cadbury's Dairy Milk

Happy birthday to Cadbury's Dairy Milk
16:42 AEDT Sat Jan 1 2005

One of the world's best-selling chocolates is celebrating its 100th birthday this year.

Cadbury's Dairy Milk was launched in Britain in 1905 in a bid to challenge the Swiss and French dominance of the milk chocolate market.

January 1 sees the start of the year-long centenary celebrations, opening with a specially filmed birthday trailer before British TV soap Coronation Street.

The other events are being kept under wraps, but they include the company sending presents to people across the UK who are also turning 100.

Members of the "Happy 100" club will also be entered into a draw to win a special prize.

On-pack promotions are also running, with consumers getting the chance to win two seats at the best British events of 2005.

"It's not every year that you turn 100 and that's as true of a brand as a member of the public," Cadbury's spokesman Tony Bilsborough said.

"That's why we're trying to involve as many people as possible in our birthday celebrations, including the Happy 100 club.

"There aren't that many people who are going to turn 100 and we want to share our birthday with them."

Some 500 million bars of Dairy Milk are produced each year in Bournville, Birmingham, and sold to about 30 countries worldwide.

The distinctive purple wrapper, the colour which also adorns Bournville railway station near the factory, has made it one of the world's most recognisable brands and a British institution.

A total of 12 Dairy Milk varieties are now produced, the recipes for which are kept under lock and key at the Bournville factory.

"Dairy Milk was launched in 1905. In the years beforehand, the UK market had been dominated by Swiss and French chocolates. They were better than anything on the market at the time," Bilsborough said.

"They were made with powdered milk, but George Cadbury Junior set out to use full cream liquid milk. The bar was soon out there and it really took off and was extremely popular.

"Within two decades it was the best-selling chocolate brand in the UK. It's the texture, I think. People often talk about chocolate having mood-enhancing chemicals, but that's just scientific mumbo-jumbo.

Wouldn't it be nice if the world was Cadbury
Chocolate roads and trees 'n' birds 'n' bees
Delivering all kinds of letters daily
Every kind of purple parcel too
And if the dog did try and grab a mouth full
You can bite him back, he'll taste delightful
Wouldn't it be nice.!

Wouldn't it be nice if the world was Cadbury
You could surf inside a chocolate tube
Ride your board across the wave forever
Get wiped out and never get a bruise.
And if a shark came up and tried to bite you
You could say "I'm chocolate I invite you"
Wouldn't it be nice!

god i hated those ads.

but the chocolate's good! in fact i'm going to go eat some right now
