A 3-year-old girl was listed in critical condition after being shot. She was taken to Children’s Hospital along with a 7-month-old who was said to be in serious condition, suffering from trauma, after being dropped in the commotion.

A 41-year-old and a 22-year-old were shot and taken to Sinai-Grace Hospital where they were listed in critical condition Tuesday afternoon. An additional patient was taken to Botsford Hospital, no details were known, early Tuesday afternoon, about that victim.

Police describe the gunman as a 6-foot tall black man, weighing about 200 to 230 lbs. They say he stormed the day care, fired a hail of bullets and then fled the scene. He was wearing dark clothing and had a blue steel automatic weapon. A search was on to find him.

The shooting took place in a home that operates as a licensed day care facility. It is located on the 19000 block of Woodbine, near 7 Mile and Telegraph, on Detroit’s northwest side. The facility is registered to Annette Rice.

As a precaution, and because the gunman was still on the loose, Detroit’s nearby McKenny Elementary School was put on lockdown following the shooting.

Both Detroit and Michigan State Police responded to the scene. Two people at the day care facility, which backs up to Telegraph Road, ran through its backyard and flagged down Michigan State Police troopers.

By 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick had arrived at the scene and was seen speaking to investigators. Later, he and the police chief, Ella Bully-Cummings, addressed the media and described the suspect.

Initially, authorities reported a fatality in the shooting. They later said no one had died, though several were critically wounded in the incident.
