Governor of Baghdad assissnated

Quote:
Insurgents assassinated the highest-ranking Iraqi official in eight months Tuesday, gunning down the governor of Baghdad province and six of his bodyguards, and a suicide truck bomber killed 10 people at an Interior Ministry commando headquarters, the latest in a string of violence ahead of Jan. 30 elections.
Quote:
The militant group of Jordanian terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, Al-Qaida in Iraq, claimed responsibility for killing Gov. Ali al-Haidari and his bodyguards, according to a statement posted on a Web site known for carrying such claims.

"We tell every traitor and supporter of the Jews and Christians that this is your fate," the statement said.

This Iraq election is going to be a disaster.

Gee, I wasn't expecting that one! [/sarcasm]

It's very unfortunate.

Ah, I heard about this on NPR this morning. As sympathetic as I am towards the loss of those people, I have to say that I expected something along these lines to happen, or at least an assassination attempt. It's sad that they actually suceeded.

But remember folks... Old Geroge Bush is going to keep saying "Democracy is on the way. Stay the Course... Stay the Course..."

Does anyone honestly believe elections are going to happen this month? And if they do, if anyone is actually going to turn out and vote?

This whole thing is a sick, sad joke that is costing lives on every side... But Bush and company don't care because all they cared about was removing the big, bad dicator so Amercians who don't have a realistic grasp on the world and what terrorism really is could sleep better at night

This is no way to democracy. I can't see how Iraq is on the way to become a stable democracy any time soon.

And it's kind of unlikely that elections will take place this month. What a mess...

I actually think there will be an election because Bush will insist on it. However I believe the Sunnis aren't participating to any great extent. So if the Shi'a win majorities (which they probably will) then will the other groups recogniize them.

The worst fear is that Iraq dissolves into a civil war. That would be worse than what is happening now notwithstanding the current situation being so dangerous.

Also it wouldn't surprise me if Bush started pulling the reoops out this year with the reasoning being that it would all be in the Iraqi's hands now.

I think it'll happen and that its going to be really bad. On the Daily Show last night they did a report on how the US is going to send people to make sure that the polling goes right in certain places in Iraq. Now here's the amazing part...These people are going to be monitoring the polling from JORDAN...A completely different country. Does there really need to be anymore proof that this is a mistake when the people making sure the polling for a country goes right aren't even in that country?

According to Bush and others the reason they're going through with this is to show the terrorist that things are changing. All this is showing them is more people to target. If this president is assissinated, who's gonna wanna step up and take his place when they know what's going to happen?
